July 2020 update - I have been reading online a large amount of complaints about Zpacks as of late (probably the last year extensively). When I was using a bunch of their gear around 2016-2017 they were very quick to reply to issues or questions. That no longer seems to be the case and customer service seems to have fallen to the wayside in the name of business growth. There have also been other issues regarding quality control, claims of them not living up to lead times given at purchase date, claims of bad work place conditions, and other things I don't care to get into as I try to not to get involved in the Internet drama but it maybe worth looking into if you are planning to purchase a piece of gear from them at this time. I understand that at the time of posting this Florida is being rocked by the cov situation down there and I am sure that is taking its toll on their production as well but these types of complaints have been going on for a decent amount of time now before all this happened. Either way I am not telling you not to buy from them or to continue to buy from them. Maybe these stories or issues are exaggerated. Maybe they are not. I would however suggest you do your own research into other peoples issues regarding customer service and quality control and understand that there is a high probability you may not receive the same service that I was provided at the time of purchase

I've got a 2015 version of the camo Duplex and have over 100 nights. It's been a pretty tough tent for sure. I've had it in blizzard like conditions and even in a tropical storm. No rips, tears or other damage. Still in like new condition. But I just picked up another one (2018 version) but with the flex option. My first night in it was a week ago on top of Max Patch with temps in -1°F & -15°F wind chill. Once again it's a tough tent. One thing I did notice with my new duplex was the tie out lines (green/yellow) seemed to almost glow against the snow. It was wild looking. Great review video. Keep them coming. I really enjoy them.

Ya those yellow lines are BRIGHT haha I thought it seemed kind of odd on camo anyways but you certainly will see them! I actually returned this for the Solplex for the AT. I ended up buying it again when I got home. Exact same specs. Really grew to love the Cuben!

What is your impression of the setup with free standing options?
@therealbennybraden

tom bock I think it works well. I like that I can still adjust the height of the tent like I would just using my trekking poles. Now I will say the only time I plan to use the flex poles is in the winter time when I know I'm dealing with frozen ground.
@ChrisGoesOutdoors

They work pretty well. Its easy to setup once you do it a few times. You can adjust the height super easy with them as well. Where I camp in the Whites most of the shelter areas have wooden tent platforms. While I could finagle setting it up with trekking poles the free standing option would really shine here.

ChrisGoesOutdoors , great review Chris. I have a Nemo Dagger 2p that I love and it weighs 3lbs, 12 oz packed but it’s primarily for when I take my daughter and or wife for the room . I manage the weight ok for solo use but I’m looking for something lighter like 2.5 lbs packed or less for when it’s just me. Do you think the Zpacks is the best option? I’m 6’3 and do most of my hiking in the Whites of NH , want something freestanding or semi freestanding easy to pitch on rock or wood platforms? Having a hard time narrowing my choices down. Do you think the Copper Spur 1P HV is a good size for one? Any other recommendations? Thanks any help is appreciated. Footnote, I don’t use trekking poles either
@ChrisGoesOutdoors

Copper Spur may not be a bad choice price wise and it is free standing. The duplex is a great tent though and I have to admit I really like the Cuben. I believe at 6'3 you should be good to go and its nice that you can get it in freestanding. Even if you bring stakes with the freestanding duplex it will weigh in right around 2lbs which is great. I actually returned this initially and picked up the SolPlex. After my experience with the Solplex on the AT I just reordered this tent. It should be here this week. I think that says something about it. I am trying to think of a longer tent that may give you more length being a bit taller but can't think of anything off the top of my head. You may consider checking out the reddit ultralight forum. People there are really helpful when it comes to tent choices!

ChrisGoesOutdoors sounds good so you would give the both the Freestanding duplex and the CS your endorsement then? Tough choices but good to know they are both solid. In your opinion is the Duplex easy enough to pitch on rock and or tent platforms. I’m not the best with knots, lol
@ChrisGoesOutdoors
6 жыл бұрын
+Kevin Guzda I have the two person copper spur and it's incredibly solid. The duplex is easy to setup freestanding. Setting up on a platform without the freestanding would be a little more challenging but not impossible. I usually put stakes at the ends of the lines and then find a heavy rock to out over them. The stake just kind of becomes an anchor and the rocks keep the tent taut. No real knots required

I'm really looking forward to using my duplex w/ free standing option when I go on my AT flip-flop hike in a few weeks. It was pricey, but in your demo the taut-ness is much better with the poles

I actually ended up returning this and getting the Zpacks Solplex (single person version) instead. The Solplex did well in the rain. Only issue I had was with driving rain. The Solplex is different than the duplex in that the backside is more open thus the driving rain on one night on the Appalachian Trail was rough. From what I have seen and heard the duplex does great in the rain. You can close down all the doors and be quiet covered from the elements. It was shocking how many of these tents I saw on trail. The design is great. Its kind of what I compare most other tents to.

Very helpful review, thanks! One question... what is your opinion of the camo vs olive vs spruce green colors? What are the pros and cons of each?
@ChrisGoesOutdoors
7 жыл бұрын
+rudy pospisil olive is the lightest and thinnest grade cuben of the three. I actually have the solplex in olive. The camo I believe is the middle thickness. It's much less translucent than the olive so more privacy and arguably better in most stealth situations. Never seen the spruce in person but supposedly it's really thick and not see through so if you feel for some reason you'll be insanely rough with it maybe thats a better choice. Hope that helps!
@rudypospisil4094

Wow, thanks for the quick reply. Regarding your Solplex in olive... is it too see-through or is it no big deal? Can people pass by and see everything that's going on inside your tent?
@ChrisGoesOutdoors
7 жыл бұрын
+rudy pospisil no prob, caught me on a zero day! Haha. it doesn't bother me at all. You can definitely see that someone is inside. Depending on the way the light is hitting it but it's definitely masked. I'd compare it like a tinted car window or like a hazed glass kind of effect if that makes sense. If you want 100% complete privacy you probably would want camp or spruce IMO

I like the Duplex Flex poles, but modified a few things to use ring magnets and BIC pen caps. I keep the Flex poles attached to the top rings of the tent all the time, so that I don't have to waste time getting the ends into the itsy bitsy rings. Also, I don't use itsy bitsy rings for the poles at the 4 bottom corners. I made a first video: kzitem.info/news/bejne/l42d0I56m32japg

My only problem with this tent would be that crispy noise when I move around. That'll wake the whole camp up in the middle of the night.
@ChrisGoesOutdoors
6 жыл бұрын
The noise goes away very quickly with use. The material itself also loses a little bit of the physical shine as well. I also own the solplex which I have used extensively and when the tent is setup taut I would say the noise levels would be close to or identical to that of say a nylon tent. I also suppose that noise level tolerance varies from person to person but I insist it does quiet down a ton!

Hi! I've just found your channel and apologize if you've addressed this elsewhere, but do you use a ground cloth with your Duplex? If so, what? I'm debating ordering mine with a heavier floor in order to skip it, but then a Tyvek sheet with the standard tent might be just as durable. Decisions, decisions! Thanks. :-)

+M A Walker I actually returned the duplex. Wasn't a huge fan of it persay. I explain the whole ordeal in the description of the video. However I did end up picking up a solplex. In all honesty I wouldn't use a groundsheet with the duplex if I still had it and don't intend on using one with the solplex either. The bottom of the tent is pretty thick and I personally think groundsheets are overkill. If something somehow pokes through I will just pop a little piece of repair tape over it. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

haha no problem. I have a video up of the Copper Spur UL2 if you want to take a closer look. Though it appears they have done away with that design and are now offering the Copper Spul UL2 HV. I saw the HV UL2 in person and was kind of meh about it. The doors no longer open full rainbow (which I like about the regular UL2) they added more mesh to the bottom foot area which looks like it goes really low to the floor (which could mean rain splashing it under the fly in heavy rain but who knows). They changed the pole set up as well so supposedly it gives you a little bit more room. Hoping someone I know picks one up so I can do a little side by side comparison. Appears places are pricing the regular UL2 at a fair discount so you can probably score one in the $300 area new. Anyways! thanks for watching and best of luck on the tent choice!

One quick question on the flex system on the Duplex.... can you still stake out the 4 corners? Or do the rings get in the way? Also... do you find yourself using the flex poles more or your trekking poles now that some time had gone by since making this video?
@ChrisGoesOutdoors

+RESTLESS OUTDOORS you can still stake it out with the poles in. The little rings tie through the stake loops. So the poles go in the rings and still able to stake of needed. I actually returned the duplex in got the solplex instead

But once the tent is set up, do you have to have another poncho to go out in the rain or is the person just stuck being inside their poncho tent for the rest of the time. Example...gotta hang a bear bag, but already set up poncho tent. Do you get wet, or take down the tent? Doesn't make sense to me.

I think the freestanding duplex flex is very appealing. But I'm concerned that I need to put the rings myself (things like I need to put 4 corner rings + 2 metal hooks on the peaks + 2 rings on the side walls?). I don't know how to use knots. Will this tent suit for me?
@ChrisGoesOutdoors

+bob It is extremely easy to tie the rings in and they include instructions. I thought it was kind of weird given how easy it was and how much you pay why they don't do it for you. Maybe something with production time who knows. But yes. Rings = very easy to put in
