Simple reason why Japan chose 1067mm(a.k.a. 'narrow gauge') rail width for almost all JR and private railways(except Shinkansen): The 1st japanese railway line opened in 1872 between Yokohama and Shinbashi selected the British railway standard which used the 1067mm narrow gauge. All other lines built later in Japan (and Taiwan which was ruled by Japan) naturally must use the same standard for maximum connection opportunities and vehicle inter-operability....until the advent of Shinkansen in the 1960s. In the 19th century, the british railway system including railway construction and locomotive tech was the most advanced in the world. No surprise Japan chose to adopt the most advanced system at the very beginning of its railway development. Narrow gauge is also quicker+cheaper to build than wider gauge for railway networks with lots of tunnels, bridges and sharp curves like those in japan.

@@azuma892 nope....not until the opening of the chunnel HSR(High Speed Rail) connecting France which technically is a French TGV design/system.

Is also why whenever we ride inside a british rail or london underground train, it feels narrower than a MTR or Airport Express train in hk.
