I thought I'd take the FZ1000 to the races to see how it did. I learned a few things, including that the TV cameramen at races should be applauded for how well they can track and follow a race....it's not easy.
The FZ1000 is a great, great camera. The IQ is fantastic, the zoom reach means that you can get pretty much any shot you want. DOF is more limited than with a DSLR, you won't get the crazy shallow, DOF you would with a full frame camera, but it is possible to get some out of focus backgrounds. Focus hunting was an issue on dirty shots, where people walked between the camera and subject, which is to be excepted on AF, so most of this was shot on manual. The AF is pretty good, especially the tracking. Far better than anything I've used before. Stabilisation is top-notch even at an effective focal length of 592mm in movie mode and I tested both stabilisation settings quite alot with this footage.
Very little PP was done on the footage, some stabilisation on the handheld shots and some colour matching on others. I pushed one or two clips to see how they take PP and the answer in some cases is as well as one can expect and better than that in most of the others.
I shot handheld and on a video monopod. I used a ND8X filter to get the exposure down and was shooting at 1/50 with a variable aperture and ISO 125. (I felt that the ND8X softened the image a bit more than I'd like, going to look into this more.
In the sun the aperture varied between F6.3 and F11, the highest that I could push the aperture in movie mode. I was shooting in 4K at 25FPS (PAL). On board microphone.
