TZX is a compressed audio format like MP3. It would take several days for an 8bit 28MGHz computer to decompress it, and it would be too busy to load it up at the same time. That's where the Pi accelerator comes in handy to pay such files in real time (or indeed quicker than real time). The Next can then just listen and load the same way it loads from tape.

I missed the first kickstarter because it took place in February, a month where I always have extra bills to pay, so when the secnd campaign was announced, I decided to join the fray no matter what, and I'm pleased to say that it paid off: I finally received my Next on December 11, 2023, after three years of waiting. As for the price, I don't think it's that bad, considering what I originally paid for my Spectrum +3 back in 1987: it cost me roughly DKK 3.000 back then which is equivalent to about DKK 6.400 today. Compare that to the cirka DKK 3.050 I paid into the Kickstarter in 2020 (I went for the accelerated model!), and I think you'll agree that it was not an unreasonable price to pay.

Back in the day, I remember waiting 15 minutes for Starglider 128K to load. The speed difference nowadays is mind-blowing! A thousand times faster, and a similiar jump in complexity too: 8500 transistor on a Z80, to a couple of billion on a modern CPU. I think I'll just stick with an emulator and a quick fix of Rebelstar Raiders, or Halls of the Things. It is amusing to hear folks complain about 30FPS as unplayable for modern games. The old Starstrike 2, felt like barely 1FPS at times. >_

Reviewing is fine, of course. But you didn't pay to buy a product from a store. Kickstarter is NOT a shop. You don't have consumer rights, you are being rewarded for your contribution to a project in the hope that it gets funded and you receive it. Sometimes these projects fail, sometimes they get delayed, you aren't entitled to a thing. This is the risk of Kickstarter and self-entitlement based on a monetary contribution has no place within the rules of crowdfunding. This kind of attitude places so much pressure on the creators that it almost always causes unnecessary mental strain and it warps the entire ideology of what crowdfunding needs and should be, so please stop with the I paid this for product rhetoric as that simply isn't what Kickstarter is ever about, you're fueling its demise.
@CatGoneCrazy
4 жыл бұрын
Lift-Off Global Network I don’t believe I’m fuelling its demise, that’s a bit dramatic, isn’t it?I think we’re taking about different things. I’m talking about a former editor of mine who wouldn’t let us review anything we’d backed on kickstarter due to a perceived conflict of interest. I don’t see what that conflict of interest is because I want a Kickstarter to be good, just like I want a game to be good. I think if you’ve paid money to help get a project to happen and it does, you have every right to expect that thing to be what it claimed it would be when you backed it, and to be able to offer a critique of that item. That’s not the same as consumer rights, expecting an advertised product to fulfil its description. They are similar but different. So yes I agree there’s a risk when you back something, of course there is. But I don’t think this video is fuelling the demise of Kickstarter - I think you’re making a good point about the difference between crowdfunding and shopping, which people should know, but I don’t think suggesting I’m destroying the platform is particularly nice or helpful. Kickstarter’s awesome; I’m not destroying it.

Your tale of tape loding woes brought back memories of an adventure game that was included on a Sinclair User covertape, called Escape. For some strange reason, there was a slight error on the tape which meant that I had to adjust the azimuth of the tape head in my cassette deck in the brief interval between the tape header and the actual program data block. It took me an entire night to get it just right, but when I finally succeeded, I quickly saved the game to disk on my +3, so thankfully I did not have to do that thing ever again.

7:15 The TZX doesn't work without the Raspberry PI because the format support arbitrary formats that require a separate "thing" to produce the square wave while the Spectrum / Spectrum Next itself is running the actual (usually custom) loader software "listening" for those wave file "edges". I guess the Raspberry PI will "read" the TZX file and generate the square wave for for the Spectrum to load. Great video by the way.

It gives you the option of booting up as a 128K, 48K, +2, +3 etc to make sure the RAM is compatible, but I still had the same issues. Eh? I’m sorry but I have to correct you there. My second ever home computer was a ZX Spectrum+ (after a Commodore VIC-20) and I don’t use PC emulators to play games (only official products like Evercade, Capcom Home Arcade, Numskull Quarter Arcades or Nintendo Switch eShop). Secondly, I still have a ZX Spectrum +2 which I’ve used on my channel and play actual cassettes on. Thirdly, devs like Quantumsheep are making new games that run on real hardware and they’re very much real Spectrum games. And finally, this isn’t a cash-in modern emulator like the C64 Mini. It’s an actual ZX Spectrum. Licensed properly and even with a case designed by the original Speccy’s designer, the late Rick Dickinson. There’s nothing ‘fake’ here. It’s the actual next generation Spectrum. One that loads games reliably and displayed them well on modern TVs. It’s OK to still love vintage hardware, but this is genuine. Not fake. But have a great day all the same. /rant

Thanks for the lovely comment. It doesn’t bother me; I’d rather fill the screen, which comes from years if playing awful, letterboxed PAL translations. I know some people can’t stand it, I’m sorry it irks you.

@@CatGoneCrazy It's stupid to talk about letterbox PAL translations, because ZX Spectrum games are ALL European and not letterboxed. If you want to fill the screen, just buy a 3:4 monitor.

Loading .TAP is easy in the sense that it's just a binary blob of data to be copied into memory. But loading .TZX would involve Spectrum emulating itself because the format is meant to encapsulate non-standard loading schemes like turbo loaders or copy protections. Getting it right would be near impossible (or very slow) on a real machine and that's why an external piece of hardware is needed (or a PC emulator). So, the advice is to use .TAP whenever possible.

I have seen other people using their main computer to run Audacity to use the audio from your cassette player and normalize and clean up the information stored in the cassette. Then you precisely control the output volume from the soundcard into the Spectrum.. Just an ideal. Great video!

Another possible method is to load a tape image into an emulator on the PC, and feed the audio out from the computer into your Spectrum. E.g. the Spectaculator emu has a very loud sound when loading tape files.

You were doing so well until you brought up piracy. How the living heck is having ZX Spectrum games on your SDCard, Piracy ? What, exactly, are you "pirating" ? Comeon, man, it's been 38 years from the Spectrum launch and most of these companies are long gone, with exception to Codemasters - but even then, I wouldn't even copy their terrible games.
@CatGoneCrazy

Mr Kirk Some games are still active IPs and as a result they’re not available on World of Spectrum. I’ve made games myself (for iOS), I would want to be in charge of their distribution and if they suddenly had 1,000 downloads, I’d want some money from that. It’s not that crazy really, I just respect copyright because I make stuff too. Try working hard at something and then see how you feel about people taking it for free. It’s not nice.

@@CatGoneCrazy iOS isn't 38 years old, would you still want to be in charge in another 38 years ? And quit with the holier than though attitude, I work hard, but I don't expect to be paid for something I did 38 years ago. Lets see a show of hands for those who think Copyright should end after a certain number of years, I expect there are many. In the 80s, everyone had the FULL extent and use of Copyright from design, to programming, to distribution, to making money. If they couldn't make money in the 10+ years they were given, then that is their problem. NOBODY, today, is losing out if you download a full set of ZX Spectrum games, or even C64 games, BBC B games, ZX81 games, etc.... The only way of getting these old games is either a rom file, or pay someone on ebay - NONE of the original software houses will get a single penny. So excuse me if I simply don't give a fuck. Games released today, or in the last few years, where there is a place to buy them on tape, I will gladly support.

What I'm saying is that some have said they are NOT happy for free distribution, and I respect that. I don't think that means I have a 'holier than though' attitude; it's just common decency, surely?
@mrkirk4944

@@CatGoneCrazy Look, what I am saying is that the law, the Copyright law, gives you, me, anyone a specific amount of time to design, produce, and sell a said item. In the 80s, this time was anywhere from 1980 to the 90s, this is plenty of time to make a nice profit. Copyright was never intended to be a money printing law, it was never intended to be a lifetime protection against someone else from using or copying your work - no law should give you lifetime protection, you benefit from society, so why shouldn't society also benefit from your works ? But today, no thanks to Disney, Nintendo, and anyone with enough money to lobby Governments, Copyright is a ridiculous life + 70+ years. how is that fair ? How does that benefit society as a whole ? It only benefits those with money, the super rich. You mention decency, then how would someone just wanting to play old ZX Spectrum games, play today, by your logic ? Would you expect them to buy a Spectrum, buy a tape deck, buy a joystick interface, buy a joystick, buy a CRT TV/monitor, then buy the original media ? Is this your idea of "Decency" ? For a start, why would anyone even do this ? Even myself, a massive fan of owning the original hardware, would rarely load these old games using the original media, I would use modern SDCard media and roms - either on my original hardware, or a Spectrum emulator. And doing this, nobody, no company, no software house is losing a single penny. Even Codemasters and their, quite frankly, ridiculous denial of distribution of these old games, would not lose a single penny because they no longer sell these old games. And don't bring up IP rights, no company loses their IP rights because WOS distributes their 30+ year-old games, that is silly. I don't suddenly gain rights to Codemaster's BMX Simulator just because I can download the BMX rom for use on my Spectrum. I appreciate you value your iOS work, but that is completely different. It's still on sale (?), it's still available, I guess ? I do respect Copyright, but up to a point.
@CatGoneCrazy
4 жыл бұрын
It's sadly no longer on sale, they kept updating iOS and I couldn't (afford to) keep up. But I do understand what you're saying. And of course I agree. But all I said in the video was that it can load files quickly, which is great, but that not all games are out of copyright so I don't condone copying stuff for free that someone still values somewhere. That's all. I'm more than happy to play .sna files of games that the creators have agreed are public domain (that's awesome), but in the few instances where copyright is restricted, I'm happy to track down original copies instead. We're talking about the likes of OutRun - and who wouldn't want that amazing box art on their shelf? I love the old cassette tapes and their inlays so it's not so bad. I do hear what you're saying and I agree 70 years seems excessive. Isn't it to do with Alice in Wonderland or something? And a charity that benefited from it? Either way, there should be at least a portal where you can pay a set fee and download anything you want. The games are so old now I agree few people will care, but those that do shouldn't be punished, and it is stealing from them if it's against their wishes. I hope you enjoy the Next, bud. I'm not against what you're saying, but I do respect the wishes of the few that have retained their rights. They are, after all, their rights. And I couldn't expect to have mine upheld if I'm breaching everyone else's.

Well, I said at the start that I was reviewing it from a nostalgic point of view, playing old games. There's definitely another video that could be made about the modern Spectrum scene. I also haven't had time to explore all the pack-in content that comes on the SD card - the Next has genuine improvements in colours and display, making it feel more like a NES with the newer stuff.

It's interesting how everyone always reverts back to what they loved as a child even though the graphics aren't as advanced as today. There is something very emotionally "safe" about these games and consoles. It takes you back to a warm place. I don't have the spectrum anymore but I still have my old amiga 500 and sega megadrive and still love playing on them. I actually got rid of my PlayStation and now solely play these old consoles.

greenkitty82 I’m still a professional games journalist and firmly believe games were better in the ’90s and ’00s. ’80s stuff like this makes me feel warm and fuzzy, certainly, but it’s hard to argue the games play well. Truthfully many play badly. But they still have a magic that’s been lost in recent years that makes up for that fact. What was the last game that had true magic in it? Breath of the Wild? But you’re right, just like my dad loves listening to The Monkees, for me getting out my Sega Game Gear is a surefire way to feel happy. And that’s so awesome :)

TheRealCatGoneCrazy yeah I completely agree. And it's the same even with old movies, like I really like Hitchcock movies and you can see the special effects aren't great because of the time but that's the charm of them - I just don't feel the same "cosiness" if you want to call it that with modern day stuff - as you brilliantly put it, it doesn't have that magic ✨✨ I'm actually looking to get back some of my old amiga and megadrive games for nostalgia and to take me back to that place when I think the world was a great place and everyone just chilled. Retro games, movies, music, clothes, love it all 👍

@@CatGoneCrazy 38 years actually it just fells like 50. I think you really ought to replace your Rose Tinted glasses with real ones. It looks nothing like a spectrum which was smaller and had blue rubber keys. You admit you will not be playing games on it, you just wanted a nostalgia hit, £200 is one hell of a price t pay to put something away in a cupboard. Just buy a broken one on ebay £50 to look at or a boxed and working one for £75 and get all the nostalgia you wanted then resell it. back in the day I have had Oric to Amiga and all in between but as I can emulate all of these plus many others I may feel nostalgic playing the games but not for the computers
