I was 21 years old when this aired and was the biggest ZZ Top fanatic on the planet! I couldn’t wait to watch the boys on Johnny Carson. I make sure I’m home ahead of time and turn the TV on. I was in small town west Texas and the TV station was experiencing technical difficulties. I flew into a psycho rage and flipped out. After a moment it hit me that my dad had satellite TV and he might be able to pick it up. Me, my wife and a best friend jumped into my 455 Riviera and drove 100 MPH across town to my dad’s house and I stormed in there telling my dad to get his TV switched over to Johnny Carson immediately before I missed ZZ Top! He switched channels and Carson was on clear as a bell and ZZ Top was about to come on. ZZ Top didn’t do TV appearances so this was a first and I was so excited that I didn’t even realize Doc had fked things up with that stupid horn! So this video brings back a really cool memory for me that I have never forgotten! Back then the Internet didn’t even exist so there were no do overs or watch it on KZitem later, you miss it, you miss it. It’s funny how 35 years later I can set here and watch it over and over.....RIP Dusty!!!

I remember this but watching it again after all these years makes it clearer - Doc Severinsen's band (which shouldn't have been accompanying to begin with) missed the first bar cue, you can clearly hear it and see Billy Gibbion's confusion. It's actually a pretty incredible recovery by ZZ Top considering he not only repeated the opening line but the entire band shifted a chord change and re-adjust the tempo the entire song. The MVP goes to Frank Beard, always the under-rated member of the band, who adjusted on the fly playing on live TV without a click track to a song that on the album ironically was done by a drum machine.

So fuckin’ cool! ZZ Top oozed cool! They wrote some of the most slickest, badass, honey dripping songs ever written. They wrote songs for real men, although a beautiful women who loves ZZ Top is a special thing, timeless songs that make you want to jump in a muscle car, throw on your aviators, cruise the highways, and seek out some tush. We lost a national treasure when Dusty Hill passed, the man is an icon (especially for Texans) and will be missed. Now, for those of you jackasses criticizing the recording... this was the 80’s, the quality of the video is not a true representation of what it actually sounded like live (duh) and ZZ Top is all about being relaxed, so take a cue from the fellas. Also, this was their first live video performance, so if you knew history (and you obviously don’t) you’d know this appearance went off like a rocket and worked pretty damn well for them. Performing on Johnny Carson was the pinnacle for performers back in the day and it helped make ZZ Top a household name, along with MTV and their amazing hits on “Eliminator.” Everything that happened that night- from having the house band play along to Johnny sporting a beard, and keeping up with their mysterious persona by disappearing at the end and not doing an interview, this is what made ZZ Top unique and a band loved by millions. Back in the day it was about having personality, not like today’s artist that seem to be manufactured and cookie cutter. If you have anything negative to say about this performance then the problem lies with you my man and your own lack of intelligence. You see, the 70’s, 80’s, and even the 90’s were a special time in the world and we’ll never have another decade quite like them. You folks should feel damn lucky you even have the chance to glimpse that world because those of us who lived it will always have something you’ll never have... class.
@JodeJackson

WTF is doc playing. He sounds like he`s filling in for the high school marching band. This is ZZ TOP not the Flaming Flamingo`s.

As a musician, the house band was nothing more than 100% disrespectful and literally offensive to musicians in Sharp Dressed Man (things do go wrong in music, just this time the horns undeniably did the wrong thing) however this is one absolutely awesome and beautiful post of the boys and so good to see. Tush is amazing. Thanks SO much for posting this ❤💛

I was in Texas sometime around around 1970-72 and wound up seeing a show featuring a band called ZZ-Top. The music wasn't really pure country, but the guys looked country... well groomed, big hats, tight jeans, cowboy shirt, boot, belt-buckles, etc. I'd never have remembered the band's name except for its peculiarity. Advance more than a decade later and here's the same named band with a couple of smash MTV videos/records. From the sharp, well dressed look, the band now looked homeless complete with rags and beards. I just figured the band's lineup had changed. It was years before I realized the band members were the same; they had just reinvented their look and sound.

When you remember the era we were in, when rock was still thought of as poor mans music. This was magnificent that they were even invited to be on the Tonight Show. Johnny was so cool. This was the hand of approval when Johnny invited you. You know that you had arrived. Having Doc jam with you was an honour. The crappy, cheesey shows nowadays are just scuzzy, money scraping disappointments that hold no element of dignity, pride, nor class. Johnny….he was ALL OF THAT AND MORE.
