I remember a late night train ride from Amsterdam to Groningen in a winter many years, some decades ago when there still were winters. On a long stretch of high speed the train driver announced that he would turn off the interior lighting so we could all enjoy the spectacle of the pantographs' blue arcing lights lighting the snow covered flat farmland. It was magic!

Not as much as the motor windings. This really hammers a motors armature and stator windings. High power motors have capacitors to deal with some of the power fluctuations but this is pretty hard on them, shortening the life of the motor. Motors prefer, smooth, steady power even during throttling.
@weeardguy
3 жыл бұрын
@@ph11p3540 Judging by the sound of this train, everything is powered bu chopper or VFD-circuitry. NO direct power to the motor at all and thus not likely to encounter power-fluctuation op to that level. And the voltage also has a part in this. Judging by the relatively 'weak' arcs, I think this is 10 or even 25 kV. That means the train carries some form of 'static converter' on board, further reducing the severe effects of fluctuations. Because of that high voltage, arcs don't do a lot of damage (as the current is rather low), this compared to the same event in the Netherlands, where the low 1,8 kVDC also means huge currents (I think the max is somewhere around 3 or 4,5 kA). Loud, fat arcs are the result, which can be heard for a kilometer if you're lucky.

Afaik - those Øresunds train are designed for dual-voltage cross-border traffic in Sweden at 15kV 16-2/3Hz and in Denmark at 25kV 50Hz. They have energy re-generation - so instead of converting the motion to heat in the brakes when stopping, then they use the motors as generators converting the braking power back up into the caternary - for other trains to use. I bet the sparks observed here are not due to the train consuming power - but the train putting power back to the catenary during braking :o).
