@superyazari did this Fire pit have a steel base or anything on the bottom side, or was the fire directly onto the concrete?

Sad how many don't believe this. I worked for a home demolition company. Everything but wood and concrete went to land fill but the concrete and wood went to same place for burning. The concrete slab and bricks mixed in with the wood explodes none stop. We burned the pile every 5 houses or so and it would burn for about 2 weeks. Also had huge stumps and logs from trees that were on those properties. That concrete would sound like shot guns all the time. We would still have to dump while burning so that was always interesting.

Heat expands things. I think something evaporated inside and the pressure suddenly got released. When heat is applied to concrete it usually forms little micro cracks. Explain if you know what happened here or was it just a prank for us.

This usually happens when you make a fire with or on wet rocks. I don't know if it's the same with cement but with rocks when it's wet and it's exposed to very high temperatures the water inside of it boils up and has nowhere to go which causes the rock to explode, that concrete looks kinda wet so idk.

You re absolutely right, the concrete here is getting tons of rain so I assume there's was humidity undernearth

concrete is porous and water settles underneath, when it's heated the water turned to steam and explodes. concrete should NEVER be used in on or around a fire. as a home test if you're willing, get a LPG torch and hold it in one spot on the concrete, it will start spitting and popping within seconds.

That was a BIG (and expensive) fire pit. Very lucky that no one got hurt; exploding fires are wicked! Question: We have a low height wood burning fire pit. With a single use on grass, it got ruined from heat for more than a year. Now we have “Exposed Aggregate Concrete” patio. Would it be safe to use that fire pit on the patio? UPDATE: There are several articles on internet; it a no no to light up a low height fire pit that inducts heat to the floor. The heat will damage the concrete patio and twist the embedded iron rods. Best is to use a propane fire pit; they are high level.

It’s moisture in rocks, they boil and get trapped with nowhere to dissipate so it keeps gaining more energy and eventually blows up

Yeah those thin metal rocks are terrible about that... The concrete slab they are standing on is what exploded ... advertising for these fire pits shows them on brick patios drive ways etcetera...

Rocks can explode under a firepit because of being wet and you have to dry it for a while or it could explode in minutes

its when the rock or in this case, concrete has even a little bit of water in it, the water boils and has nowhere to go so it builds pressure and explodes
