57:38 - That's just the truth. Buakaw is aging like a fine wine. Honestly, it doesn't even matter who he fights-just the fact that he still fights so incredibly is enough. He was the one who got me interested in kickboxing and Muay Thai, and to still be able to watch him compete after all these years makes me grateful. It's the same story with Saenchai. It doesn't really matter to me if the guys they fight are way below their skill level. The fact that I can still enjoy watching them fight brings me the most joy.

Great episode this. Spot no - ONE is def built to be more digestable to the general cpmbat fan that will tune in. They can keep you though as the production and package they give is great. RWS is more for those really interested in 'true' muay thai. This will not be a recipe for global success that will rival ONE and other combat sports though. I am a prime example of what I have just said. I started muay thai and love ONE. Love that I get to tune into a show every Friday and be entertained. The more that I watch the ONE Friday Fights though it does irk me that it is geared towards slugging... or if you want to be generous... it really favours those who are at a super high-level in terms of striking. I wish they would let the knees and clinch go a little more. But only a little. Clinch fights are boring. Its much like MMA... no one wants to watch two guys rolling for 25min - that's the reason BJJ on its own will never be a huge viewership puller. Muay thai is the best form of stand up striking though and so it should always get the eyeballs. RWS does need to start promoting their fighters though. Build them up, create characters that we want to support and follow. Give them their bonuses in the ring - it makes the viewer feel like they watched something special. Overall I just want muay thai to thrive and unfortunately it will mean 'simplying' the entire muay thai experience (we cannot have a wai kru before every fight televised... it means nothing to the average viewer at home). And if that is a sticking point for a promotion, then that is fine, but accept that you will not dominate the muay thai scene and be okay with that. You will still have your fans that love it. Great podcast though. Having just discovered you, I'll be tuning in from now on ;)

Something that must be remembered is that the tv viewer is not aware of the local Muay Thai circuit at all. So the only context that we have on the fighters is what we know through the promotion. This is why social media is also important but the two work together. We need to know the fighters to have any understanding of the stakes.

Country-wise... like you say, France is out and in their place is Russia (and its in the same argument as Iran... maybe not champions but volume of good/high-level athletes out there)

Great episode. Really enjoyed it and look forward to watching more. As for one of the points you brought up - I definitely think muay thai can become a global sport. As you all said, the way it has grown over the last 2 years (mainly because of ONE and RWS) it will only continue. I do however think that if you're looking for an orgnisation that can challenge UFC on a global scale, they would need to do something like ONE does and make it a martial arts focus. I love muay thai so I can watch a ONE Friday Fights or RWS, but I think the average fight fan would be attracted to a promotion that has MMA, muay thai, kickboxing, grappling and then maybe even boxing and special rules fights (like ONE has done before).

Great counter but if you don’t mix it up, a high level striker will counter your counter. Surprised the fighter throwing the head kick didn’t bait with the head kick and counter.

The previous promoter of LWC was indeed doing his best to bring back the titles and crowned a few champions in 2023. The new promoters/matchmakers right now don't seem to be interested
