Hi. I'm 28. I'm currently playing Cricket for my State. I'm having OSD on my left knee. I wanted to know that , does OSD pain comes if u don't train your quads, hams , glutes and calf muscles ? I mean if i train these muscles properly then is it possible that the pain will go away ? Have u tried strengthening these muscles and see what happens ? Because surgery has to be the last option.

For me, this happened when I was young probably around 15 yrs old. I played baseball, football, wrestled, and lifted weights. I’m sure during that time I could have done more, however it was 35 years ago and there was little information about my knee pain. The doctor just told me to ice it and it will go away. As an adult I have always been active with, hiking, cycling, lifting weights, martial arts ect. So my legs were fit, and it didn’t matter because the damage was already done. The reason for my surgery was because, it ached and hurt when I sitting or laying in bed, no activity. For many of my athletes that I coach , OSD either goes away all together or you have pain throughout your life. Hope this helps.

From Post Op day 1 until now, what was your daily physical therapy exercises? Which movements brought the most frustration or discomfort? Which ones brought the greatest return on strengthening/increase pain tolerance? How did you pace yourself during recovery? Did the docs give you a timeline, or did you set your own goal dates?
@l3adventures689
3 ай бұрын
The only physical therapy I do is stretching now. Squatting was the most difficult. I paced myself with gradual movements until I had full range. My doctor said it would take about 6 months to be 100%. However I climbed Mount Katahdin and Mount Washington in the same week within 4 months after surgery. Hope this helps.

A sport specific orthopedic surgeon is the only way to go in my opinion.

Guys, I am 1 week after surgery. I can tell you what doctor explained me. In fact removing only the small part of the ossicle is 50/50 and may cause the pain after surgery. Depending on bump size. In my case the bump was pretty big and they had to cut the patellar tendon partially and use the twinfix anchor. The recovery is for sure much longer. I am wearing the cast for approx 2 weeks, after that period I will have orthosis for 4 weeks and looong physiotherapy. I will let you know once I know more :)

So, Ive struggled with this my most of my life, and honestly had no clue that this was possible. I was told that any procedure related to this condition was essentially cosmetic at best, and would risk mobility and strength outside the most extreme cases. Could you possibly fill me in? Whats it like? How much does it cost? (I'm in CA...) Risks? Recovery a year plus out? Regardless, thank you for this content, you have given me hope!
@l3adventures689

I was also told the same thing about it being cosmetic. The Doctors in the past seemed to not understand the pain that the ossicle was causing. I have no issues with my mobility or the strength in my knee. I have zero pain now, with some numbness on the outside of my knee. But it doesn’t affect me at all. Cost depends on your insurance plan. I think mine was around $2,000 or $3,000. I had crappy insurance at the time The advice I would give you is to find a team of Doctors that treat athlete’s. I went to the University of Michigan Sports Medicine. Hope this helps.
