Man, this is such a well-crafted video, everything was well said and unlike 'open world' you said what needed to be said and didnt over do it to make a ten-minute video. it fells very reminiscent to a film course essay and I loved it.

It is debateable honestly. Open world seem a must given the modern standard, not necessarily for the actual gameplay, but for the mere aesthetics to create a mood of a big space. Here we should differentiate between games which used open-world as an aehstics and those which are purely dedicated to their open world (with some shades in between, of course). Even RDR2 is far from perfect, but the way it beautifully presents itself with the triggered interactions and a lot care to detail, it makes you overlook the greater issues with the game. Ubisoft games and others alike usually have a main story which is enclosed in a small area where the mission (that 90% of the time is linear) takes place, while the rest of the world may be all about 1) collectables which little impact and crafts, 2) filled with arcade mini-games, 3) some smaller side-quests or mini-quests which don't affect much of the gameplay or the story at all, 4) filled with grindfests due to the introduction of RPG levels where you need to do repeated actions for X times in order to level up or get the desired item or currency in order to progress the main mission line. The 4) case is just MMO-type skinner-box which , when packed with long travel distances because of the open world design, it ends up extanding the gameplay with 2-10 hours more than it should be (some even introduce travel-posts for quick travel) and they are a hell for the 100% complitionist player.

I definitely felt the fatigue of tears of the kingdom. It felt like they went the Ubisoft route: more more more is better. I never had a chance to even finish a quest without picking up four more quests, which led me feeling like it was just a checklist. At the same time, there was practically nothing to do in the underground and the sky, leaving the world to feel both bloated and empty. Idk, it was kind of a disappointment, and I would have liked if they would have spaced out their quests a bit. Even if most of the quests were pretty good, they weren’t “memorable” because I didn’t have time, I had to do the next quest. Plus I never had much room or incentive to experiment with the world’s interesting mechanics, gotta get to the next quest fast as I can. Not to mention the extreme ease of traversal… like I got from one side to the other of Hyrule within my first hour, HOW, we used to say this world was massive but now it feels like a miniature Lol sorry, that’s just my rant on totk

I've been enjoying linear games like Tales of Arise (it is taking my time and I am letting it because it is a fun game and I now want to get all the trophies). I got exhausted with open world games because it is too open, but Spider-Man, Forbidden West and so are great to explore. I also enjoy the Sherlock Holmes games because I don't feel like I am wasting time when I could be having fun in combat or so.

Idk, halo infinite and Metro exodus definitely benefited from the open world. Halo’s formula was about the sandbox, which was given more freedom in an open world. Metro was about surviving a harsh post-apocalyptic world, which was given a more realized view in the wild wilderness they threw you in. Both of those games’ core ideas were better realized in the open world, even to the point that their most criticized parts were when they closed up.

I totally agree with you. RDR2 for me personally is masterpiece of gaming. When I was playing it I had a feeling, that I am a part of the world. This world is not waiting for me. It is just living, things are happening in the background and maybe I will encouter them or not. This was shocking for me, because I have a feeling that I am not gonna experience all the things that have been prepared for the player. That I will miss something. And this feeling was only there, because of the habits from other games. When I finally switched my mindset to just enjoy the world, adventure and the nature around Arthur, it became my favourite game of all the times. Then I've played Hogwarts Legacy. Exploring Castle was fun, but the lands? I was constantly doing same boring stuff over and over again, simple Merlin trials, camps cleaning, boring races, no real rewards. I abandoned the game at 50% completion. It is also so unrealistic that all threats are just waiting so close to the school, nobody is doing anything with them and some lonely student is able to just annihilate everything. Then it was Zelda: BoTW. I rate it lower than rest of the people, but the exploration is top notch. You have 4 goals, whole world opens and just go. As you said, another example of great open world. And now I am playing Immortals: Fenyx Rising. I am 2 hours into the game and I am already bored. I running from marker to marker, world was build for the player, like nobody was there before, again so unrealistic. Quests are boring and repetetive. I am probably going to abandon the game at 25%...

Nah, it's probably the worst, THAW is slightly better, and THUG1 is the best. THPG gets a lot of hate but it's also a contender for being one of the best aswell. Thing is, there's a distinction between Pro Skater and post Pro Skater games, as they started to take a different direction after THPS4, the best THPS game is probably THPS3. In regards of which is the best Tony Hawk game in general, it comes down to personal preference, but objectively THUG1 and THPG are the ones with the better writing and more polished gameplay, with THUG1 being the classic gameplay while THPG was a new style that Neversoft started to introduce with THP8 and lightly with THAW, considering THPG was margins better than THP8 besides some random decisions, Hawk10 would've been the best one if it didn't get canned by Activision to make Neversoft focus on GHWT.

These companies need to get over themselves and accept that new live services aren't going to work unless they get extremely lucky, we'll continue to have our big dogs like fortnite and whatever else for the foreseeable future. But the odds of a brand new live service that isn't part of an already existing popular franchise managing to get people off the live service games they're already playing are slim to none.
