I planted separate male female kiwi vines that developed into a huge rookery for the California Mountain Quail on place. It intertwined on some posts, rails, and poles to the size of 8' ft. high, 10' ft. wide, and 16' ft. long trellis. There were about a dozen of the grey breasted with brown and black feathers that lived, roosted, and nested on the entangled long vines. Occasionally a female wood hatched about 12 chicks and would run around eating low flower pods. They even ventured in the horse and mini donkey corrals to pick up the seed from the hay we threw out. Very distinctive calls, chirps, and gobblegrunts came from their beaks and throats. Redtail Hawks would cruise the area to try to catch one. Was a site to see along with the wild bronze breasted turkeys with purple heads, red waddles, and a 6" long tail of a beard. Thanks for the clips of some of them coming iut of their egg shells.

HI , Thank you for sharing. I am really blessed, for I get to see quails almost every day. I live right by the Beautiful Smith River in Crescent City, CA. It is so much fun to watch them and really is relaxing. We have chipmunks 🐿 also. I can name all sorts of cute animals, birds, and even foxes . Also, river otters . Thanks again

Used to live in the Okanagan, British Columbia. These dudes were a highlight. My parents called their little calls "Chicagos" for some reason, don't remember why. Love them

I remembered Professor Hanson, said "Listen for its call, Chicago" and by George, I heard it! Warmed my heart because my maternal grandpa lived in Chicago! C-h-i-c-a-g-o! Thought it might even have worn a tiny "Cubs" baseball cap🧢🐓.

I'll always remember seeing a California quail family (near JPL, Pasadena, 50 years ago), 6 chics following in a line, ... till the day I die, I am thankful to God for creating them🕊🙏

I think the Allen’s Hummingbird should be classified as the state bird of California. The quails seems to have completely disappeared and forgotten. I will ask the Governor of California to make a switch from the quails to the hummingbirds.

I'm from Chile and these quails were introduced in 1864, Central Chile has a climate similar to California and they became extremely abundant. I've hunted a few myself and they go great with any recipe that calls for chicken. Lovely birds, I love seeing them.

I've lived in California my whole life and have only seen them twice! Saw them running and flying across a road a few days ago in rural Benton, CA. I just love their little "Chicago!" call.

This is the bird that started my bird fever. I lived out to Washington and discovered a family in my yard. They get so plump this time of the year. Seeing them in snow is something else too

This is Califia’s Quail. A regal bird. The state of California should make trafficking and gaming of this bird *illegal* and a *felony offense* . It’s *cultural* and regional fauna. Sacred.
