My Computer Science degree is probably an outlier, but it is still really expensive compared to other european nations’ degrees, considering the quality is comparable.

Yeah it depends what degree it is and where I’m a computer science grad at a top university and I never run out of job opportunities, coming out of uni my first job was paying more than my parents jobs

@@LondonMoneyCashEnterprise Yeah, plus the UK tuition loan has a safety net built in, if the degree doesn't produce a satisfactory salary, you end up not paying much or at all, and it gets written off after 30 years.

Yeah, are you recent graduates or did you graduate a while ago? I'm not very familiar with computer science, but I can imagine it's a good degree if you want high pay.

I would suggest yes it is these days, unless it is explicitly vocational, such as Law, ..................become a plasterer, bricklayer, mechanic etc via an apprenticeship after A levels.................that's the way to financial enrichment now. Plenty of graduates burger turning, or making coffee these days whilst up to their necks in loan debt.

Absolutely, even law is a tricky one because there's so many graduates that it takes years to rise to the top and the pay is questionable, same with accountancy. I know an accountant back in college on a trade course.

It's such a shame that you cannot find a Great Books degree programme in the UK anywhere. I don't believe education at a tertiary level in the UK is actually true education (in the majority of cases), it's not about learning about Truth, Beauty and Goodness, it's about 'employability' and 'transferable' skills. That's not education. That's training. All this effort to make HE more accessible has had the inadvertent effect of devaluing HE degrees, lowering standards and at the same time demeriting vocational training paths. As a result, we haven't got enough decent craftsmen and tradesmen (try getting a reliable builder these days or a plumber!) and have way too many young people who have higher degrees and expectations but not much expertise to offer. And that's not their fault. The system is not serving them nor our country.

@@TCJB33 Do you agree with this comment that education should be about "Truth, Beauty and Goodness" or the other comment by @maxthelab8457 that education should be "explicitly vocational"? These are complete opposites, you can't have it both ways!

I like the chosen example of self-sacrificing love of those who fought in the great wars and I think it illustrates well how we can transcend our innate tendency towards self-preservation.

Some good points made there. I used to swear a lot even though I was conscious it was vulgar and had respect for those that refrained from swearing. When I made a conscious effort to refrain from it I found that I was more calm and more inclined to think before speaking because I had to conjure up vocabulary that would replace the swear words with adjectives. Swearing also betrays emotion or gives a false sense of emotion in speech which is disadvantage, for example in trying to convince someone in an argument or debate. I used to (falsely) think that swearing was liberating and gave freedom to express oneself, but it does the exact opposite as it supplants vocabulary and turns you into an unpleasant person.

That's interesting, particularly that trying not to swear made you more likely to think before speaking. That's something I hadn't considered but it makes sense. What you said about it supplanting vocabulary too makes me think of the dumbing down of the broader culture and how swearing might be a part of that because it's the easy choice and stops us from working our brains and really thinking about what we're saying. Thanks for watching and the contribution, gives me more things to chew on!
