All these videos should tell viewers that the new Apple m1 is running a translation layer called rosetta(2) that will impact performance. At this time Ableton is not optimized for ARM, so rosetta in the M1 is translating the x86 code. The Intel macbook pro is running natively (no translation).

How clueless are you? It's not because it's "throttling", but because neither Ableton or the plugins you're running have ARM versions, so they're TRANSLATED on-the-fly from x86 to ARM via Rosetta2. It's super impressive that it works as well as it does with that translation, half the cores and no fan...

I think it's because Ableton only recognises 4 cores of the 8 core processor. In Logic you can get it to run all 8 at its far more efficient. Ableton has always been terrible for efficiency I really hope they update soon, but this is why I bought the 16' 6 months ago because I knew Ableton would be useless! Well, I've been trying out some video editing as well and I tell you, the m1 is outperforming the intel big time, and it is not even getting warm. I believe the performance loss we are seeing in Ableton is due to optimization, and/or rosetta.
@kevinhdirect4582

@@stedtmartin9403 kzitem.info/news/bejne/2GOBtYqapYiKiIo Check out this video. Apparently a settings switch made Logic running inside Rosetta NOT natively basically on par with 2019 16" MBP. Is there perhaps a similar setting on Ableton? It used to be Logic was running significantly slower just as this Ableton test shows. This could be whats holding Ableton back too, but I'm not aware of such a setting?
@stedtmartin9403

@@kevinhdirect4582 Hmm, so Jon Sine sets a thread settings in Logic, and get increased performance? That's pretty cool. Haven't seen any similair settings in Ableton, unfortunately. Ableton 11 is around the corner though, maybe the m1's will get some love :)
@kevinhdirect4582
3 жыл бұрын
@@stedtmartin9403 considering the difference in performance in Jon Sine's test, it doesn't make sense that M1 on Ableton through Rosetta would be so much slower than Intel. Because Logic in that test is also being run through Rosetta. If there isn't a setting in Ableton then things don't add up... It would make zero sense. Both applications are run through Rosetta so in comparison to native intel they should yield comparable performance gaps

@@saardean4481Let say you get 15% faster. Or maybe not even faster but on par, you'll get amazing battery life, cool running laptop, no fan noise ( very rarely even with pro, as it seems ) with apple silicon. These are points that checks alot my boxes, but everyone has different workflows :)

@@stedtmartin9403 the only thing of these arguments that is of interest me is fan noise. But even this i got used to. Battery i dont have an issue with cause i always work pluged in the main power. I just travel (obviously not now) cause of work, thats why i need to be able to take it to other countries. The only reason i need-want a faster computer is for it to be a lot faster so i can use oversampling in some plugins and also use 2-3 plugins more that i now can only use if i render steps of the process. That would speed up my workflow at least 2x. 15% more wont cut it. I am talking 2-3 times faster, but not only on paper. i have the feeling it will have to be the 16inch m1x . who knows.

Which version-What specs does teh 2020 Macbook pro have? Would be very useful to know
@@stedtmartin9403 Thanky you. So do i see this right? Meaning as long as i would use Ableton in Rosetta then the m1 Air is same if not slower speed than a previous generation 13 inch with a 2.ghz quadcore? Btw i dont think you can use a comparisson "which is hoter" in order to see if its throttling. The m1 has completely different temperatures from what i see in videos. So even if it was throttling , i doubt you would be able to tell by touching it cause you have no reference on when a laptop of this generation is "hot" like we knew after a point about the previous generations when they got so hot that the hands begin to sweat :-)
