I would love to have the PS-B80. For now I use the PS-X600, which I have kept over many other more expensive tables. I am sold, I can only imagine how much I would love the PS-B80. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and time!

I have a PS-X75 in perfect working condition. I bought it in 1986 on the spur of the moment while trolling used audio gear shops. I didn't know what it was but it was a Sony and it looked expensively made. Probably the best deal I ever made, as I bargained them down to $175 with a Shure V15 Type IV cartridge installed. I don't use it that much, then or now, and the V15 is still good. I love my Harmon Kardon ST-8, but it is a high maintenance device. The X75 just goes like the Energizer Bunny.

This turntable, the PS-8750, and the PS-X9 were awesome examples of Sony's leadership in turntable advancement. I could not afford any of these and still can't. I settled on a PS-4750 which is running as it did 44 years ago when I purchased it new. Although it does not have adjustable VTA, VTA with the Shure V15V-MR in SH-35 headshell is perfect, as if turntable and cart were made for one another. I also have a new Technics SL-1210GR, which does accomodate cartridges which end up riding tail low on the Sony, but using carts which can be leveled on the Sony, the Sony gives up nothing. Love it. In today's dollars the PS-4750 would sell for about same price as a Rega 8. New, it cost about $330, about what they go for used today.

The PS-B80 was the first and most expensive Sony turntable with the new developed biotracer tonearm. Its a true state of the art turntable. Then followed the PS-X75 as top model of the PS-X series later that year for less than half the price of a B80 but very close in quality. In 1980 Sony followed up with even less costly models PS-X500 and PS-X600,as well as the new top model PS-X800 which has a tangential biotracer tonearm. By then the tec was shrunk and higher integrated. In 1981 the PS-X700 followed but was already not exported worldwide,which is sad because it is a further perfected version of the PS-X75 and the last top quality turntable from Sony. In 1984 the PS-X555ES ,also with a tangential biotracer arm was released,but by then Sony was already out of the turntable buisness. The X555ES doesnt has the quality of the older decks.

I have the X75 and the X70 which does not have biotracer arm. The X75 with biotracer sounds no better, but can handle record warps better. Fortunately, most of my records are very flat from using the Warp Out record flattening device.

What is force of the stylus? What stylus?
@fiddleronthebike
7 жыл бұрын
??? the stylus is the "needle" which detect the frequencies out of the groove; and every stylus have a decent force (somewhere between 1mN and 3mN) so you have to adjust it. Most turntables do that with adjustment of weight, some - as this Sony - microprocessor controlled with electro magnets

Ron, I don't recall the BP-80 sounding a lot better. Funny what 35 years does and doesn't do to your memory. It seems like yesterday. Had the salesman thought I'd spend the extra money, I think he would have convinced me to buy it.

Love it. I really should have spent the extra $200 to get it in 1980 instead of my PS-X75. Love my turntable though.Back then my 18 year old self thought the main difference was the stylus cleaner and the electronic adjustment of the stylus force. Oh well.

Actually getting bored watching all the features. Nice bit of kit. Imagine showing off to your friends back in the eighties on how you can barely comprehend the full capabilities of this amazing machine... As if programming a VHS wasn't enough of a pain in the arse! I'm glad were over that phase now and probably appreciate a simple vinyl spinner for it's hands on tactile usability along with an apple touch screen.

I hate to say it, but Japan always sent over the garbage over the years, while they kept the leading electronics for themselves. Case in point. They had the reversing tape decks, before we even heard of them...

Hi, there should be a little rubber plug next to the tonearm pivot. If you remove that plug, there should be an adjustment screw for the drop point there. Hope this helps get that lovely thing spinning more records again.

@MyHobbyChannel1

The electronics is typical Japanese, complex und very functional, but the machine needs definitely maintenance. Some parameters, like stylus force, needs adjustments. Particularly the capacitors are old und should be replaced. Then the player works fine for the next 30 years. ;)

I bought the PS-B80 back around 1981. I still have it but it's stored away in my attic. Time to get it out and start playing vinyl again. I had B&W 801 speakers with a Pioneer Spec 1 and Spec 2 power amp and preamp. Also a Technics 64 band graphic EQ.

How much maintenance does it require? Or is it typical of impossible to kill Japanese electronics of that era and requires nothing more than a good dusting off from time to time.

Vey durable machine. Mine is still going strong. Although a tune-up & maintenance schedule would help it last the next 35 years !! How many electronic components can make that claim? And Sony was known for making some pure crap products. At the same time, they also produced some cutting edge electronics.
