There is a darn good reason that some songs are still around about a hundred years later...

Mrs. White always liked them. She was my first supervisor at Stanford Library. A cantankerous perfectionist, but had great taste in jazz. The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, cats could swing.

We call it Dixieland, but they call it Jazz, Original New Orleans Jazz, played in that good old style, by good old musicians,in the hall where Jazz was born. I've been there. It's just a little hole in the wall, but you may have to stand in line for an hour to get in. There's no drinks or food, and you may have to sit on the floor right in front of the trombonist, But you'll hear music there that you'll never hear anywhere else. I played this song while in high school, in a Dixieland band, and have heard it played by maybe forty or fifty bands, but this is the real stuff.

You can also find another amazing versions of this truly eternal song by incredible artists, most are unkown anonym singers and musicians, but with incredible talent too. If you love the song, you'll love the playlist.

One of my favorites! Why is this music, like other greats, not more mainstream? Young people are learning. Thank you for sharing this, M.

What is more beautiful? A soulful trumpet solo like this or a trumpet screaming around with ultra-high notes? (No serious question intended.)

Of course that this is more beautiful, but often the stuff like super fast passages and super high notes aren't supposed to be the most beautiful thing, they're played because the players are having fun together, showing off their chops, and all that. Different styles for different contexts.

Tempo is PERFECT! I hate it when bands play this more up tempo. This song is about anticipation, especially in the question and answer.

this is really great; sounds like what i heard at the hall back in the 70's from some real old timers. this is the sound of the old trad players, and i love it! thank you for a great gift of music!
