My defensive with miku expo even tho i didnt go..bc i couldnt is if they put an actual hologram with all of those lights, Miku will not show up right. And even her older concerts you can even see the transparent glass screen as well

dude THANK YOU for this video. you are literally the only person i've seen through this that both shares all my points (ESPECIALLY with the glass projections. i was frankly pissed off with people acting like the glass screen and the led screen aren't fundamentally the same thing when viewed. the setlist one as well, like i'm sorry miku didn't sing all of the songs you liked when you were a vocaloid fan as a teenager) and also fully understands what miku is supposed to be. the commercialization of miku and her brand Especially when the internet is growing more content with the idea of pulling and selling yourself no matter how unethical it is is frankly getting worse and worse and i seriously hate how people Especially over here are ignoring the sense of community that truly makes miku. i've only been a fan for 7 years and i've been both grateful yet disillusioned with the community, yet at miku expo i finally felt like i found my people. i was a very introverted fan and after i dropped out of school and moved i found less opportunities to connect with people. knowing how many people shared the same thing i did was surreal but extremely grateful. in my case, it was my first (since you know what slapped in before another tour could happen here), and i went to miku expo with my longtime parter and some of the closest online friends in my life. a nice lady lended me her penlight during on the rocks and i did some of the choreo on the floor (since i was off to the side) and i had such a surreal time. i love miku so much and i hold a lot of respect for all of the creators that bring her to life, so seeing the unnecessary backlash (as in just the screen besides the weird shady marketing with the penlights "affecting the projection") felt like a punch in the gut to the community that love her and create for her. i'm a private creator (mainly artist) at this current point in time but i do run a public miku website for myself, and that's enough for me as a creator. i'm happy to simply be a fan, and i want to do as much as possible very weird comment that goes all over the place, but i really appreciate this video. thank you. maybe at some point i'll stop feeling disillusioned PS. i'm also a huge fan of your work lol

This video felt like a breath of fresh air. THANK YOU I won't disagree that Expo 2024 was messy. However I feel like the community took it a little too far considering the fact i've seen people be incredibly rude about it. It's stressful that people are acting like an LED screen is the worst thing ever. Yea sure it doesn't look good but when it gets to a point where people are acting like it completely ruins the show..you can see how annoying it gets

Sorry but l really disagree about say all time classic songs big time . Every established rock or pop group will have at least 3 or 4 all time classics that will always be in a live set otherwise fans will rightly get pissed off about it and l dare say it's the same with Miku . Yes l am a relative newcomer to vocaloid but have been to a lot of live concerts and established fan favourites has always been a constant in every live set . Drop them and the hardcore fans will be the first to stop going the sort of people that have enabled any act to form a fanbase to build on
@oxymoroff
Ай бұрын
Yeah, I didn't say they don't need to play any classics. It is a staple for any artist to play at least a few of their classic songs, for sure. Miku included. I said that fans can't expect an artist to *JUST* play their classic songs every tour. And there were 3 or 4 classics in the Miku Expo setlists this year: Miku by Anamanaguchi, World is Mine by Ryo, and Tell Your World by KZ. I would also vouch for Unknown Mother Goose being a classic, though maybe not Wowaka's most recognizable song, and On The Rocks by OSTER project is definitely a classic among MEIKO and KAITO fans. I agree, I don't think the fans would be happy at all if the setlist had no classics, that's why I didn't say that. But fans can't expect a full setlist to be made up of just the classics.

I really appreciate the thought that went into the video, and I entirely agree with your pet peeve regarding the misconception that they've ever used "Holograms"! That and the false rumor that they've used "pepper's ghost" has bothered me for years. However, there is one big advantage to the transparent screen that I think goes overlooked at 1:40 - With their common projection setup, (Multiple projectors from the center positioned right and left behind the screen and mapped over each other,) it does provide the bonus that even if you're on the left or right side of the venue, the perspective is still relatively consistent compared to that of an LED screen. Yes, the two are indistinguishable in that if you look at it from the side you see nothing ; but in many videos taken from previous expos from people on the front row, no matter if they're on the left or right side, you can see that the projection doesn't appear as flattened and it's all thanks to those extra projectors. The same issue can happen if there's only a single projector - if there's no added perspective then it will look extremely flat, no matter whether it's an LED screen or a projector. Having multiple projectors does really help the illusion that the image being projected is holographic I love your point about the community though; and I've had a similar experience at Orlando! I ran into someone who's known my work through mutuals for a few years and it was so awesome to talk to them - and while this year's miku expo did disappoint me, *Only* due to the lack of warning about the new band (who were still amazing, just not the musicians I hoped to see live for 4 years,) The energy of the crowd just made the concert such an amazing experience. That was worth it for me, even more than the concert itself. Again, great video; and I appreciate the nuance in addressing the valid criticisms while embracing the good!
@oxymoroff
Ай бұрын
That's a great observation! Somehow I usually end up pretty front and center for the shows, so I've never noticed it myself, but it makes sense that the multiple projectors would help add some depth! I know that in the past some venues had restricted seats that were too far to the sides, even with the projector system, so I assumed the limitations on the 2 were pretty much the same. It's wonderful that you still had such a great time! And for sure, one of my biggest complaints over this tour is just the utter lack of communication about all the changes. I will say, though, in regards to the musicians - while I don't doubt that using local musicians was for sure a cost cutting effort (those artist visas have gotten real expensive starting this year!) - I noticed that the lineup just hasn't been consistent in a few years, anyway. If you were expecting to see the 2016 and 2018 in North America Miku Expo band, well unfortunately that particular lineup just hasn't been the same since 2018. The 2020 Miku Expo in Europe band only had 2 of those members, and Miku Expo 2021 Online was a whole new band (though that might have been due to special circumstances, since that wasn't your average Miku Expo). All the musicians have been great, of course! I just don't think we can expect the same band we had before, sadly. I know that my favorite member from the band, keyboardist MEG.ME, retired back in 2020 to raise her child. 🥺 So while I don't know the story behind why the lineup changes, there are definitely circumstances like that. I definitely agree that we should've had some sort of communication about how the band would be totally different this time, though! Thanks so much for your comment, I'm happy you enjoyed the video!

@@oxymoroff That's true! And fair; I've been a fan since 2013. not as long as many of course, but still, it was the year Magical Mirai started and the reason I became a fan was because I absolutely loved the character the live band adds to the shows. While they've had a lot of changes throughout the years, it has been my dream to see two of my all time favorite musicians who commonly play live - the guitarist and drummer from the main Magical Mirai band, Masaru Teramae and Kosuke Kamata (Camacho). Those two musicians have influenced me in ways that no other musician has *ever* done, and their phenomenal playing inspired me to be pushed to my limits on my two favorite instruments. The bands are the reason I got into vocaloid. Even if I'm going through a season of not listening to vocaloid music, I will be watching every official concert to come out so long as the band gets featured. What especially upset me about this was partly emphasized by the horrible ticket prices for non-vip. I went to 2016 NYC and 2018 DC and both times I got what I relatively expected to get from the band and setlist for only about $120, and the fact that the tickets were so insanely priced this year *ontop* of the lack of communication just sort of took away all of the excitement for me until the hype from the crowd got me back into it. I had a ticket in 2020 and was So excited to at the very least see one of my favorite musicians, and I have a theory that they were going to bring the band used in Miku Untitled 0 for that year; (could be completely wrong, but if they did, then that would have been a dream come true for me to see.) So I held out hope that at the very least there would be one familiar face in the band this year. Indeed, the lineup always evolves, but there's a certain character that has been relatively consistent in the past 14 years whether it be the same arrangers, at least *one* recurring member or the network of musicians always being relatively the same, save for a few exceptions. To me, if that character is gone and they just hire a new band every event, it really takes me out of it. Sadly that's been happening in Japan ever since the pandemic for their smaller events. I understand it, and as a musician I totally get that not every musician can be loyal to one gig for years on end. but the trend of changing members so frequently is worrying to me just a bit. I also very, very much agree about MEG.ME - I miss her so much as the keyboardist, she has to be one of my top 4 favorites! All that said though I understand they can't appease everybody. I know plenty of people who don't like the band lineups that I loved, and ultimately the bands aren't the reason most people buy the tickets, so this is all just my perspective;; I'm glad my thoughts could add anything! I've loved the concerts for 11 years, they've been an endless source of inspiration for me

The only thing that i was highly disappointed in was the fact that they did not have Sharing the World at every show. I did not get to see that, but the set list i saw i think was the best one(A). Sharing the World was the first Expo song. It should have been included in all 3 set lists. This was my first time seeing Miku & yes at first i was mad about the screen thing, then i thought, let me go with an open mind. I had a blast.

I had a lot of fun, but worry about enabling Crypton if they plan to continue to cut corners. The glass screen hologram setup is iconic for me and I really wanted to see it in person. It's a bridge between a live performance with a band, and virtual music made by the community and it wasn't as effective when Miku is separate from everyone else on a tv with a black background. She can't be a part of the band, no one can be in front of or behind the screen, so everyone else is just off to the side. They had effects like her walking up and putting her foot on a speaker which would be neat if it weren't the only other thing on screen with her instead of looking like a real prop. The merchandise situation was also disappointing. I was eager to get glowsticks but they sold out in minutes. Later they restocked without telling anyone and then sold out again. I ordered some from Mercari Japan but one stopped working halfway through. I'm told stock was super low at the venue as well, but I didn't want to get out of line to look. I don't think it was mentioned in this video at all, but I heard some voice concerns about the band. I'm not sure how consistent the band usually is, but it would be unfortunate to pick a different set of people just because they were more convenient. That being said, I really enjoyed the band. There were moments where the songs just sounded great in a way that was distinct from hearing them normally. The thing about the setlist is that everyone wants different things and if I had my way the concert would be 6+ hours and it can't be. A lot of fans want to hear the older japanese songs that have been in several games or have been popular on the internet because that's the only songs they have heard. When I search youtube for "hatsune miku live" I see really cool live performances for classic songs like Disappearance of Hatsune Miku and so I really wanted to see it live. At the same time, I enjoyed most of the songs played. I looked up the setlist and listened to each track a few times, tried to learn a lot of the lyrics. A lot of other fans went in blind. While there was overall a good mix of old vs new and jp vs en, the others besides Miku didn't get many tracks and so I heard a couple Luka cosplayers afterwards admit they wanted to see another Luka song live. Where things get messy is that some people want to know the songs so they can sing along and swing around glowsticks to the rhythm, while others want it to be an excuse to find new songs they never heard before. It's impressive but also hilarious to see a full crowd of people who don't speak japanese sing all the lyrics to songs like World Is Mine, and shows how cool having everyone know at least a few of the songs can be. I had an awesome time talking to other Miku fans. I'm used to vocaloid being niche, so seeing so many people into the same thing as me and even doing awesome cosplay made everything feel so worth it after being into this stuff and having no one around me understand it for a decade. I damn near lost my voice by the end and thought about it constantly and had dreams about it for days after, but after learning that Crypton has cancelled Project Diva due to it not making them enough money, I just don't want to encourage them anymore unless they do a good job. This was an amazing experience primarily due to it being an amazing community, so Crypton could totally cut back further if they wanted and get away with it for a while. People would still go and have fun even if audio quality became worse, there were problems at some of the venues, or band members were swapped last minute due to pay issues. The problem is that Miku concerts are THE place to connect with fans, so if the experience was soured, I suspect the community itself would also sour some. Any negativity is not directed at Miku, or even the concert performance itself, but at any mishandling that could lead to an amazing community being hurt.
@oxymoroff

I agree with much of what you said. I don't think I'm enabling Crypton in any way through this video, though. The likelihood they'll see this video is not very high. And as I said, I've complained about many things they've done and there are a whoooole lot of videos and comments made directly to them on their social media accounts about the backlash for this tour. Much of it is warranted, but after a certain point it feels very much like "Crypton definitely heard our complaints, it's time to move on or just not go if you're really so opposed." I'm not sure what concerns about the band you were taking about, they were consistently great this year! I do believe that getting musicians that are local to North America was a cost cutting effort so they wouldn't have to pay for those USA artist Visas that have now doubled in price. But the Miku Expo band hasn't been consistent since 2018, even when they were bringing over Japanese performers anyway. Besides, while I don't doubt the choice was made for other reasons, I think it's great that local performers get a chance to play alongside Miku too. As I said, I know a lot of fans want to hear the older, classic songs, but it's unfortunately just not realistic for them to play those again and again. Crypton didn't cancel Project Diva because it wasn't making them enough money, Sega did. Crypton's not really in charge of overseeing any part of Project Diva, they merely license their characters out to Sega for it. Sega makes most of the money from those games, because they do all the work. I love the Project Diva series, but it apparently just wasn't sustainable for them anymore and they lost the main people who made that game. But all that aside, I'm happy you still had a good time! I really do think Crypton heard all our complaints this year, and hopefully those mistakes won't be repeated! I just wanted to provide a different perspective from all the negative videos about this tour. Not necessarily change any minds. People are allowed to be upset still.

I went to the one in Denver, never been to a Miku show before until now and I've been wanting to go to one for years, and when Miku finally came to Colorado I knew I had to go despite the LED screen cus who knows when my next chance would be? I was surprised that my Dad was willing to take me though cus that same day that he got back from Vegas to watch one of his favorite bands at the Sphere, he was already at 3 concerts in 4 days yet he was still determined to get me to that concert. we bought cheap resale tickets and made it to the venue, the merch was sold out but the show itself was great. And my dad was surprisingly into it despite not knowing anything about Vocaloid or Hatsune Miku. I was waiting to see if he'd tap out, but we ended up staying for the whole thing and he even said that he'd want to go to another one in the future. The crowd was great too, everyone was having a fun time, everyone was singing and dancing and waving their glow sticks (wish I was able to get one, but I ended up buying one on Ebay afterwards for next time), and overall it was really fun, especially for someone who doesn't go to concerts very much but is a huge long time fan of Vocaloid and Hatsune Miku. And I thought it was cool that my Dad ended up getting into it as well and would ask for song recommendations from me.

I went and Idk why it was such a big deal the screen was different. I worked at a concert hall for a bit and the holograms were an absolute nightmare vs the screen. It was my first Miku expo and the girl I accidentally paired up with at the front row was so kind and made me actually feel comfortable and welcome to be there by myself. I normally go with family but this was my first concert alone. She was so kind and I’m grateful for her, she even offered to share her extra light stick for the night 🥺I even lamented in the merch line to a mom and daughter I’d just realized I’d forgotten my earplugs and the mom whipped out an entire jar and offered me a pair since they couldn’t find a smaller pack the store earlier😂 It was the best concert I’d ever been to hands down. I’ve wanted to go to a Miku concert for years and this being my first ever was more than I could have dreamed of.

I think more than the screen being different, fans were pissed that we were never told the screen was going to be different and we got no communication about it during or after the shows. Which honestly is kind of upsetting, even to me, who enjoyed all the Miku Expos I went to so much. I'm sure it's definitely harder to set up, but it's really a big part of the show for some people, so there should've been some warning for those people at least to not spend their money if they wouldn't be satisfied. But that's so great that you had such a wonderful experience! The crowds at Miku Expo have always been the most kind and willing to watch out for others, in my experienece!

I get being annoyed at the stuff like the communication and merch, but the concert itself and the vibes were no different than any other Expo. As someone whose been to every expo since 2014 including 2020 before it got cancelled, everyone was so much fun to meet, greet and hang out with before and after the shows same as any other time. The setlist complaints made no sense at all. It's the 10th Anniv show, of course they're going to highlight previous years themes. And that's wrong with something you've never heard before? Getting surprised at concerts is half the fun, you may end up discovering a song or producer you fall in love with. Here's hoping we keep getting more Miku Expo shows in the future.
