Similar to HOG (hemispherical omnidirectional gimballed) wheels, but lighter and simpler. :)

That's a very good question. From the mechanical point of view, it doesn't matter what is the path of the leg in the air but when their engagement with the surface. Unlike legs, wheels have a continuous and smooth contact with smooth surface. Legs are good for granular, slippery or uneven surfaces but tend to collide with smooth surfaces at high speed. The sprawl angle in this robot reduces the vertical collisions by causing the legs to slide sideways which passively stabilizes the locomotion.

i don't understand "NEARLY wheel-like performance", this isn't wheels? It looks like wheels to me, they turn continually - they don't reciprocate. This is not crawling
