You realize how long ago this was? I was doing this with an SLR and DV tape recorder. Setting up the cameras and redoing shots probably added an extra two plus hours + to doing this job and then the editing which took longer than doing the actual R&R. There are a ton of vid's on this job and this was not mean as an exhaustive R&R video. I have more in the can but the editing is more than I have time for these days. Earning a living doing these was never my plan, I was just trying to help out the community a little.

Best video I found after watching a few others. I wish I could pop my axel out like that, spent hours trying to pry it out and am figuring I will have drill the seal as it will not move, it also had a metal ring seal on the inboard side that I had to pry off. The has worn or melted the inner part of the seal and also flops around in it. Think this job should have been done long ago before I bought it, but I needed a truck in a hurry at a reasonable price. Lol

If you pop the crowbar in and just grab the notch in the axle and then pry against the axle it will really just pop out. Couldn't believe myself how easy it came out. Have had to do the job a few times now replacing U-joints and it's never an issue. Truck has over 500k kms on it now and still in service.

Good video, when I turn my front driveshaft my left ujoiunt spins but my right does not. The right also does not take grease, is that a sign it is about to seize/is bad?
@louisschummer931

The front axle is locked. Both u-joints should spin when you turn the drive shaft. Make sure you have them both set to Locked or Unlocked on the hubs, both sides should be the same setting. Check or replace the zerk fittings on the u-joint. It can be persuaded by sometimes pushing the pin in if it is rusted. Easy to replace.
@nombr

@@louisschummer931 I tried to grease it and it just came out of the zerk. Is replacing a zerk as simple as in bolting old and screwing a new one in? I have auto hubs, I will take the Center caps off and check where they are sitting Thanks for the reply!
@louisschummer931

@@nombr Unscrew the zerk fitting and replace with the same, it is that easy. Auto parts stores will have the ones you need, take it with you if you do not have a bunch on your shelf. Re the hubs I have centre caps with the hole through them to check and move the hubs from Auto to Manual. They also like to be exercised so they don't get seized.

@@nombr It sounds like something is bunged up. When I have done this job of replacing the U-joints I also replace the hub seals that keep the vacuum for the hubs from leaking and clean/lube the hub. The dial that turns from Auto*Locked is easy to remove with just a few allen bolts. Pull it out, clean it up, lube it and put it back in on both sides and see how that does. If the hubs are leaking vacuum this can also cause the hubs to not lock or unlock as well. If you replace the front U-joints replace the hub seals as well. You're in there anyway.

Just this past month I did both sides of the truck again. Replaced the Moog Problem Solvers with Spicer permanently lubed units made in the USA. While in there also replaced the seals for the 4x4 vac and on the drivers side a new Moog sealed bearing hub. Took me a little less time to do it. Truck has just short of 500k kms/300k miles on her and still running strong. I'm up here in Ont Canada and do enjoy a good PB&J sandwich but do prefer raspberry jam to jelly ;)

Rick Barnett That is just a dust seal and is discarded, it is not replaced because of the newer friction dust seal. That is per the Ford instructions.

so... the "dust seal" is where I'm getting the slop in the haft shaft, minus the play in the u-joints...correct?
@timothys3590
10 жыл бұрын
in other words Bro, the "dust seal" is what the haft shaft "rides" on before it gets to the u-joint, right? There is no internal bearing to replace, right? My spline shaft has play side to side, up and down. If it's really worn, afraid to see grooves in spline shaft...right? then buy new shaft with u-joint knuckle and replace "dust seal"...right?
@shum021
9 жыл бұрын
Timothy S The half-shaft does NOT ride on the seal, no weight at all or it would come off for sure as it is only friction fitted. That play is very much more than likely the U-joint. JMHO. Start with the "easy and inexpensive" stuff and them move on.

It sounds like it could really use a new main jet. I had one that made those same "stumbling" noises after a thorough cleaning, and it was driving me crazy trying to get it to run really smooth. It turns out that the orifice of the main jet had eroded just slightly, and I could never get it to run "just right". A new jet is about $5, and that did the trick immediately.

I did the hub assembly on that side because I did what you said could hear the bearings and I thought the grinding and vibration I feel would stop but it hasn't. I'm just going to do u joints and ball bearings on that side and hope that does the truck. I'm learning with each task and saving a lot if money. Ford wanted like $$900 to do the hub assembly. Cost me $400 for parts and breakfast for my buddy and we had it done in 3 hours. Next time one goes it will take me solo less then 2 because I've done it already.

Exactly. I have a weird vibration at times from drivers side front tire area. I'm learning as I go here. Good thing I have a Ford I've been learning quickly lol. Still love my 6.0 either way. My question is my dust cover for I guess axel or knuckle on both front tires have popped out n are just loose doing nothing. Is it dirt in my axel or is it u joints or ball joints making the weird vibration. Usually at slow speeds n recently all the time now. Any help would be appreciated.
@shum021

Philip B Not a 100% but it sounds like front hub bearings. Pick the front end up and give the wheels a spin, you should be able to hear/feel the bearings. You pull them out doing the U-joint/ball joints. Not much to it but parts can be pricey. Your dust seals are shot, change them up while doing any of these jobs, they are not expensive.
