Kinda. It’s a cute little city and you’ll see little gatherings like this in certain spots on the weekends. There are some tweakers and homeless people there but it’s definitely not the worst part of CA lol. A lot of the people in these comments are hyperbolic because they’re from bland little suburbs so they freak out when they see some homeless people

Man what a great time we use to have. Now everyone is scared of each other, and guilty of their right to be alive, especially if you identify as white. Miss this little hippie town of activist, renegade cannabis growers, and natural remedy believers of intuitive health. Comply and signal you are PC and compliant is the new norm. Polytech college with more students then infrastructure can handle, but hey it's the future $$$. Keep it real Humboldt, our children are watching

Arcata is a disgraceful place, and Humboldt County is a pathetic joke. I've lived here for more than 10 years and I've really grown to dislike this place and especially the people. Yes, the people here are more than just unfriendly. The people here are low-class discriminative bigots. For a so-called "Hippie" college town, the people here are incredibly unwelcoming, unfriendly, and will go out of their way to discrimiminate against you. They are especially discriminative towards peopl with regional accents. Humboldt is too rural for it's own good. It's just as simple as that. People here dislike everyone. No matter where you're from. If you're from Eugene, Portland, or Seattle, they don't like you because you people come here and try to take the local cannabis jobs. So they hate those people. If you're from SF Bay area, they hate you because you're too city Vibe. They dislike white collar professionals. They dislike people from the suburbs. And of course, they dislike them because they don't want them coming here and taking their local cannabis jobs. If you're from L.A., or anywhere in SoCal, they hate you because you're not from the "State Of Jefferson". They don't want Mexicans coming here and taking any jobs, cannabis or whatever else. If you're from the mid-west, they dislike you because where you come from doesn't qualify are "Cool", "Rad", "Gnarly", or "Bitchin'". Especially people from the East coast, and especially people from New York or Boston. They really, really, hate you with a deep, passionate emphasis. Why?? Because according to California people, there is no real culture in New York. A chef in a local restaurant in Eureka once insisted that there are no good restaurants in New York City. He, of course, grew up in Humboldt County. He, of course, has never been to New York, or anywhere on the East coast. This is synonymous with most of the local losers of Humboldt County, California. They have all kinds of opinions, judgements, and points of view, but I've rarely met a person who shares these opinions who has ever actually been there. Another guy once argued vehemently with me, insisting that California grows the best tasting tomatoes in America. I asked him if he's ever been out of California in his life. He said he's been to Oregon. That's all. Often, it is just disgusting to the point of wanting to vomit, dealing with these backward, inbred, idiots. There was a huge number of Trump supporters that held a huge rally in McKinleyville not long ago. McKinleyville seems to be the place where the more serious bigots toil. They seem more racist in McKinleyville. It's the people, not the place, I often say about Humboldt County, that is so dislikable and dispiccable. Anyone thinking of moving here should take what I'm saying into serious consideration before you do. However, ifyou have Rastafarian dreadlocks, that is all you need to fit in here. It is an extremely pro-Zionist community, which is why you see so many residences and local business' that proudly display lit Satanic Pentagrams in their windows. You see it all over the place and it signifies exacly what it always has. Evil. That's why the people here operate on such low levels and why they have this particular kind of arrogance where they seem to put themselves above other people and look down on certain people who they feel don't belong. The very definition of a discriminative, bigoted community. I see it in the woman as much, if not more than the men. I've seen in in many local business' and employers. The police department. The medical/healthcare professionals. The educational system. It is deep rooted and rampant. Not just in Humboldt County, but throughout California. Racism is the backbone of life in California, especially in SoCal where the gangs use racism as a tool of division inside and outside of the prison system. As far as I'm concerned, California is one huge MKULTRA guinnea pig farm. It began in the mid 1950's and was developed in the 60's. The hippie scene was nothing but a CIA scam. LSD was nothingmore than a Nazi drug brought to America with the Nazis under Operation Paperclip. All of the polical and social bullshit since that time all falls under the MKULTRA umbrella of deception. That includes the entire nation but California is where it is exasorbated and intentionally fine tuned to capture as many vain, self-absorbed, intoxicated losers as possible. California is where people are most susseptable because they are particularly desperate and poorly educated. Everyone looking for fame, or some kind of recognition because they desperately need it. That's what makes them easy targets. Humboldt is a microcosm of that kind of evil mentality. I'm planning to move away when possible. I'm just plain tired of putting up with the ignorance, discrimination, and bigotry on a daily basis.

They are a different kind of hippie up there. They actually removed the McKinley statue from the square - you know, because of white supremacy. The moment you lie and try to change history is the moment I realize you have no capacity for truth, facts, or reality. BUMMER!!

It costs more to live in Beaufort, SC (total cost of living) than in Arcata, CA. With rents between $650 and $950 and the ability to buy a full buggy of groceries in Eureka for under $180, it costs between $900 and $1,300 less to live in Arcata than what it costs my family to live in Beaufort.
