I was worried he hydraulic locked but luckily he went horizontal on the cylinders, me personally, I would of rotated the flywheel twenty times before putting the plugs back in, dude

Try to break it loose with a breaker bar easily back and forth, not a impact gun you could snap the rings.

Marvel mystery oil or transmission fluid soaked in the cylinders over several days works well too.

Word of the wise, Don't let engines sit dry for more than 6 months. Put marvel mystery oil in each cylinder, bag intake and exhaust. Roll over every couple of years and repeat oiling. You will NEVER have this issue.

Not seeing where that engine is mounted and looks like it is simply sitting on the cart and balanced on a thin piece of wood. If there was an ounce of tension in that flywheel that engine would have moved. I call BS and can't imagine he had a locked engine in the demo.

If you are restoring an antique outboard with a really stuck piston, you can fill the cylinder with old motor oil. Then, weld up, drill and tap a spark plug base to hold a grease nipple and pump grease into the cylinder to get the piston moving towards the exhaust port. The restoration guys do this and then they very carefully tap the rings with a plastic hammer all the way around and if you're lucky you can free the rings to run another day.

ATF and Acetone. Much cheaper and use a breaker bar back and forth slowly. Once it starts to move let it set for a day.

I'd never use an impact wrench. Better to use a breaker bar and gently rock things. It would be easier on the rings and the cylinder walls.
@fleetwin1
4 жыл бұрын
I agree...The flywheel should be gently rocked back and forth just a bit at a time to ensure it is not going to jam again causing more damage. You may need a breaker bar to free it initially though. Using the impact could over torque the flywheel nut and damage it, especially if the engine is really seized and refuses to move at all...

I have a Nissan (Tohatsu) 3.5 hp 2 cycle. It appears to have seized/locked and I know it it isn't from heat or temp extremes. Where would I find a release button on this motor or were you just joking with us. I am no expert mechanic but generally I can do some things. I just have no experience with this motor. It sure would be nice if this release is a real thing and I can just reset it and do some real maintenance on it to get it running and keep it that way.

from an old ob mech. it it's still seized,remove the head and pit the shaved dow nend of a 2x3 aga the piston uppermost in the cylinder give it a medium whack with a small sledgehammer. this usually works if the engine 2 cycle was not run without oil

shake up a bottle of 1 part automatic transmission fluid and 1 part acetone. pour a little into cylinders through spark plug holes and let sit for a few days. I have two spark plug bases that are welded shut. One has a schrader valve soldered in it like the valve stem of a car tire. the other has a grease gun zerk fitting. To free lightly stuck pistons after soaking. Use the Schrader valve plug alternately and fill each cylinder with air to @130 psi. That will work with less stress on the fly wheel and connecting rods than an impact wrench. If the pistons are rusted in bad, the zerk fitting plug is used by pumping grease into the cylinder to hydraulically press out the piston. If using the zirk fitting, you need to unbolt the cylinder or unbolt the crankshaft bearings in order to not damage the connecting rods.

Ok this is my method, go to any auto parts store and buy wd-40 fast acting penetration oil (not regular), lift up motor til the propeller is facing the sky. Doing this makes the cylinder in a vertical position, next remove all sparkplugs and fill each sparkplug hole for 45 seconds each. Gravity will work its magic and free the locked up piston causing there to be no crank, leave it soaking depending on how long its been in this condition in my case it was only a month so it got freed up with one hour, so u know how bad mine was locked up I broke two ratchets and it wouldnt budge before buying a straight bar

using an impact on the flywheel nut is bad business. If the piston doesn't move u can do serious dmg to the threads on the crank. then ur in trouble. Best to use a long breaker bar and move it back and forth in both directions until it frees up. happy wrenching and good luck

Yeah, Joe is right....Using the impact gun could damage the flywheel and crankshaft tapers if the engine is really stuck hard. I don't think this engine was stuck hard, just some minor rust. Follow Joe's instructions about gently rocking back and forth to avoid causing further damage internally as well.
@billbriscoe9414

Joe is absolutely right. Many things can cause an outboard to seize up. Could of been a rod broken inside or a bad ring. Easy does it with these things.
@wildkatsailing

I think you are all missing the point. if the rings are stuck and the oil doesnt unstick them its likely really fucked anyway and the impact isnt going to hurt it more.

Just use any lubricant diesel, motor oil, Trany fluid, I don't believe the impact is a good idea though it may break a ring on the piston. I use a cheater bar and feel it buy hand. That's the best method. And you might want to take the head off to inspect the cylinder, because there might be a rust ring left from the rings and cylinder wall. Then a good deglazing stone should be used. There's no quick fix for a seized engine. Js
