Askarov has very little leverage either. Not showing up to the farm team won't hurt Nashville short term. They can afford to wait him out. He'd be better off showing up and proving he is a great goaltender, where other teams would want him.

Preds fan here - Last season Tyson Barrie's camp told the media he wanted a trade and it did not go well for him. Trotz is a big respect guy, and when the request hits the media instead of privately hitting his office, he does not like it. Ryan McDonagh privately requested a trade this past summer and Trotz happily obliged out of respect for the player and it was super quick - but when a 20 year old guy who's played like 3 NHL games comes out saying he's not going to report to the minors, you can bet Trotz is not a happy man. He isn't going to trade him unless the return is fair, so I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't get traded for a while.

Barry Trotz is a clown! He doesn't know how to run an organization, and now he royally screwed up this whole situation. What the H E double hockey sticks did he think was going to play out, once Saros signed that HUGGGE extension??? Dumb move by Preds. Askarov should be getting NHL playing time. You don't draft a goalie that high, and have him sit in the AHL for 4 or 5 seasons. This will end up being a black eye for Trotz!

@@meddyven Trotz wasn’t the one who drafted Askarov, and it’s common sense to extend the already elite goaltender on the team rather than rely on the young unproven talent when we’re in win now mode. Trotz has done what he could with a challenging situation left by Poile, and he has completely transformed the team to a contender signing Stamkos, Marchessault, and Skjei. And again, he won’t trade Askarov until he gets a fair deal, so it’s a bit wild to say Trotz has made a dumb move before he’s even done anything.

@@peterandco I've followed hockey at all levels, Jr. AHL, NHL. for 40 years, and have seen Trotz for many years, at many of his stops. He may be a decent coach, but he just doesn't have the moxie to go into uncharted territory, as in Askarov's sitch. Yeah he signed Marchessault and Stamkos, but that jury is still out. Now he's painted himself and the organization into a corner. If Askarov holds out, Barry has zero leverage. Other GM's don't have to trade for him, but Trotz has to make a smart decision, and holding out for a big package, when most teams are close to their cap space limit, will backfire. What happens if either Saros or Wedgewood goes down? This is what happens, when a new regime comes in, and inherits players they did not draft. I think Askarov would accept a trade to another team, and perhaps play one more season in the AHL, if he was told he was groomed to be " THE GUY", long term. But knowing you're never going to get a shot, makes no sense! The way they played the goaltending scenario, by giving Saros 8 years, beginning in '25-26, was the writing on the wall. You want another organization to part with premium prospects, when you yourself limit him. C'mon!

@@meddyven If you were to tell me before we hired Trotz that in 2 years we'd have O'Reilly, Stamkos, Marchessault, Skjei, and Saros locked up for 8 years, and all we'd lose is Askarov, I would be one very happy guy. Trotz is a Stanley Cup winning coach who knows the league and the players better than anyone, and has changed the trajectory of our franchise. How has he painted the organization into the corner? Who's to say he has gotten a fair trade offer from anyone? Also again, he didn't draft him. He's been trying to trade him for the last 2 drafts but there clearly hasn't been a market for him.

As a Sharks fan , I feel neutral about that trade. Not good, not bad, just in the middle. Emberson looked really good for the Sharks, but was very injury prone so his value probably dropped a lot. Also, he was only a waiver claim for the Sharks last year, so all in all, we got a free late 3rd round pick for Ceci which will be flippable at the TDL. Sure the Sharks cannot retain themselves, but can make another team retain it and you pay a little sweetener to another team. It happens every year, and we all know that GMs do really like those big right-shot Dman, especially on expiring contracts, but I'm still sad to see Emberson gone. With that being said, it leaves room for the better Dman prospect in the AHL club to come and have a shot at the NHL so there's a bright side there

I don't really get the people complaining about him asking for a trade. He's looking at not having an NHL spot for 2 seasons at a point where realistically speaking he should start playing in the NHL. This is his career and if his development gets stunted it's going to mean he loses out on potentially tens of millions of dollars. I think one trend lately has been that prospects that don't like how their development has been handled are much more willing to ask for a trade. McGroarty and Broberg come to mind. And yeah, it sucks seeing one of your team's prospects go that route, but I think it's much better for the game long term if that's what happens.

Boo hoo hoo, Preds. Don't draft a goalie that high, if you have NO intention of making him your future starter. Askarov had a tremendoys run last year in Mikwaukee, when the Admirals, made a serious run at the AHL record for undefeated games streak. He certainly deserves to get his shot, even as a backup for a season or two, playing 30 ish games. This whole ditch will only stain Nashville. If they hold out, the other teams won't pony up what they think they deserve. Should Askarov not report it hurts him a bit, but not nearly as much as the Preds FO. This is only going to get uglier.

There will be no stain on Nashville for drafting "the next Carey Price" when they did or for how they’ve developed him thus far. Nashville has been fortunate to have both Saros and Askarov in their system at the same time - whether or not they planned on ultimately trading one of them (ask LA or Montreal fans). We’ll see what happens with Askarov. He put the Preds FO in a tough spot unnecessarily. In regards to Saros, he deserved his contract extension. My prediction: he wins a Vezina trophy within the next three seasons. Boo hoo. 😎

Askarov to the Kings might be an interesting move. LA has a couple of promising B-level goalie prospects in the system, but the short term outlook is pretty rough. You say that Emberson will be an RFA upon expiring next summer, but that's only true if he plays at least 50 games this season....something that's decently unlikely considering how injury prone he is. Very happy with these trades as an Oilers fan. I like Holloway a lot and I'd love it if they kept him, but Podkolzin seems like a similar player in a lot of ways, has some potential left, and plays RW instead of LW, which EDM needs more. As for Ceci, I wish him all the best. Very excited to get Emberson back (I didn't find any of their current #3 RHD options inspiring) and to NOT have to use a 1st or 2nd!
