What is the actual cutter called? Could a Dremel, glass cutter and cross slide be used to perform this on a wood lathe?

If you could give a little less information, that would be helpful....

lol. I can help a little. In some armatures a mineral called mica is used to fill the space between commutator bars. This is done for both mechanical stability and electrical insulation. Now the commutator, which is the ring of split copper looking bars is a ware item, meaning that over time the bars are slowly worn down by friction and minute arcing between it and the carbon brushes. Eventually this will ware down the bars to the point that they're "level" with the hard mica, and the mica will begin to interfere with the smooth contact between the brushes and bars, which causes very destructive arcing. The solution it to cut away some of the mica (called undercutting) and resurface the commutator.

I scored one of these from the bin at work. Not knowing wtf it was I still took it. Works fine but I don't see myself using for this purpose.? Thanks for the visual wtf it does.

Would you please post more videos of the lathe. That looks like a time consuming process. I'm an old guy 76, and remember undercutting the mica with a piece of hack saw blade. It got the job done, but the result wasn't pretty.

I have an identical tru cut lathe I just acquired and wondered if you could tell me where I can buy the drive belt that turns the armature. I am in the process of restoring this lathe and it looks great with all parts present. Thanks in advance.... Ken Bartlett Marina CA
