I think they changed Chani to make the theme of the story more explicit. It's easy to read the story as a straight hero's journey (which the Lynch movie does) instead of a warning about following charismatic leaders. Herbert actually wrote Dune: Messiah because he felt like the first book failed to adequately convey the theme. I fully agree about the length. Going from the Lisan al Gaib speech directly the the climactic battle was a bit jarring. . I would have liked a few scenes of the Harkonnen's being utterly annihilated by the unified Fremen army before the Emperor is forced to intervene.

I felt the length of the first Dune, but never once in the second. The script was as compact as it could be. It was an experience I thought up again when the Lord of the Rings extended edition trilogy was rereleased in theaters this year, and I remember being grateful that the movies had NOT launched with the deleted scenes because *goddamn* were they unnecessary. The final cut was crisp and clean perfection. Kinda appropriate that two cinematic adaptation of two infamously wordy novels yielded such efficient writing!
@WrongIdeasChannel
Ай бұрын
I actually have to disagree with you there. I find it hard to go back to the theatrical cuts of LOTR because some of the deleted scenes add so much to the story. I think The Two Towers has the most unneeded guff added (Gimli’s post-Helm’s Deep scene is pointless and so is Pippin and Merry drinking the growth water). But Boromir’s flashback in Osgiliath is very moving, as is Theoden mourning his son (an unforgettable scene for me). Then in the Fellowship there is lots of added worldbuilding and landscape stuff which I just adore, even if it makes the story less tight as you say. But we do kinda need Saruman’s death scene so for me the extended version of Return of the King is essential. However I agree that for the most part the cinematic adaptions are insanely efficient in terms of what they achieve with the writing.
@blugger

@@WrongIdeasChannel eh, the only scenes I'd personally fight for 1.) The fellowship in mirkwood, especially the pairs of legolas & gimli and Aragorn & Boromir bonding (though the latter was perhaps a little long). More interesting for legolas and gimli, imo, as Boromir gets plenty of pathos later 2.) Boromir's victory of osgiliath, especially as an emotional touchstone after the climax of the fellowship of the ring and the catalyst of faramir's decision 3.) Saruman at the beginning of return of the king, because of international treasure Christopher Lee The scene itself, though seemed to set up redundancies, as Saruman trying to turn Theoden and Aragorn (Rohan and Gondor) against one another is established in a later scene in theoden's hall and reinforced during the scenes of the army mustering. (Also for WHY he's still distrustful of Gondor after fighting alongside Aragon, well we know that the steward is EXACTLY the kind of person that would leave others out to dry!) His insecurity about his legacy is also established when he tells eowyn that it was Aragon, son of arathon, that saved their people at helm's deep. That's all he needs to set up for the greatest charge of the trilogy. And the palantir just being there I thought was kinda like the ring just you an abandoning golum in the narration of the first movie.

Although, to be fair, I'm not sure "CGI sludge" as you define it really exists: no one intentionally writs bad media with the aim of using CGI to cover the gaps. Rather more likely that things are accidentally badly written / directed / edited for any number of reasons, and VFX artists do what they can with too little time to try to remedy it. That and some films deliberately go for a quasi-cartoony look rather than a tactile, grounded one, but that's not necessarily bad in-and-of itself. The « cgi sludge » was made by the same teams that made the cgi for dune. 0:25 this anticgi KZitem wannabe filmmaker trope is getting stupid. There is no single blockbuster film done today that doesn’t have cgi just like there is no restaurant that doesn’t use water. You can have filet mignon or you can have rat poison. It all depends on what your flavour is for today. If the CGI sludge is so awful, why are those movies breaking box office records every time ? Why would dune still be a financial risk after two installments ? This is mass media and it’s destined for the masses. And the masses are collectively 8-year-olds. Don’t expect the mob to have any taste. And don’t expect the academy to tell the difference. They gave best vfx to Godzilla minus one. I really wish I had more time to tackle these bad arguments… 1) When I say “CGI sludge” I am referring to lazy, poorly implemented CGI, often poorly planned and thought up mere weeks before the film is shown. If my beef was with CGI then I wouldn’t have said ‘sludge’ after it. If you watch to the end of the video you’ll see me praise the artistry of the CGI. I have watched almost every episode of VFX artists react, believe me I can appreciate good CGI. 2) Those ‘cgi sludge’ movies AREN’T breaking box office records anymore. Ant Man Quantumania did pretty poorly, so did Mando Season 3, so did essentially every Disney project in 2023. Why? Partially because the rise of CGI means lazy, talentless scriptwriters can change things on the fly and fix it in post by relying on VFX artists to essentially write parts of the story for them. This is what happened with Dr Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. Most of these projects inherited a good, well written premise from the original authors and creators and rode those coattails to success. Yes, it takes a lot to turn away ‘the mob’ but even so, it’s now happening. Attention spans are so bad that dumb people can’t even watch films anymore - which is why they might become more of an exclusive experience in the future. 3) 30 years in this business? You’re a VFX artist? You’ve seen the ocean shots in Godzilla Minus One and you say they’re the worst you’ve seen in 30 years? What are you smoking? I have so many questions

I’ve seen enough of Godzilla minus one to call out ALL the mistakes in a New York minute I would NEVER have been able to deliver that questionable quality with the amount of VFX sups over my shoulder giving hundreds of notes for things people will never see. Just to secure their midmanagement position. « I haven’t done my job if a vfx studio isn’t closed down after my show » is a popular quote that has been flippantly heard for years in the vfx industry. 2) I’m from Montreal and have worked WITH Denis Villeneuve as a client several times sitting beside me as we look at the screen. Specifically on several high profile ad campaigns and more recently Polytechnique and within the team that worked on Arrival. He’s very smart, very observant, and knows exactly how CGI works and how it needs to be used. One thing we do agree on is that He is a true visual raconteur. Most Hollywood directors are tropical plants that have no idea how to tell a story let alone understand the vfx process. I certainly won’t tolerate a KZitem nobody dissing an entire industry and the artists sweating blood to deliver to an ingrate audience. And I am disregarding your flippant comment about smoking since it’s irrelevant to my comment. @@Neojhun There's a whole generation like that. Or it seems so. I've noticed it in my own children to a greater or lesser degree as they grew up (now in their 30s). Not to be hyperbolic but they have the attention span of a gnat. They couldn't get through a viewing of Lawrence of Arabia or The Deer Hunter.

@@Neojhun I don't have Tiktok, and I've never heard of Vines. Sorry, but the movie is just not very good.
