I still watch this movie, a classic. Hollywood now should take a lesson.

My goodness did I love to watch Gregory dance. Gregory, Sammy, The Nicholas brothers , Sandman Sims, Bill Tobinson, Bunny Briggs, Jimmy Slyde, Fred and Gene, and all of the other tap legends that have left us are having one heck of a party in the upper room I’m sure! God bless them all! As for this routine, the only thing I would change is the music he is dancing to. That cheesy 80’s synth-pop…😬. Would have loved if the scene would have had him tapping to some piano only jazz that broke down into cut time. I love when the music is simple and the tapping is front and center. Anyway, he is dearly missed!

One thing that Michael Jackson and othets were insistent on was that as many shots of his full body were captured while filming. That was because the artists knew that the real entertainment was the dancing and not the constant barrage of edits. Not only did this director and cinematographer abide by that rule, they were so creative in switching angles during the shots while not interrupting the full dance scene. This was great.

Everybody thinks this is a Baryshnikov movie. And while his own insane talent is indisputable, Hines was crushing it on stage since he was practically a toddler, well before Mikhail was even born. The man has serious skills and was taken from us far too soon. 😔

If you can elevate an art form beyond art, that is Hines with tap dancing. It transcends the perception of tap.
