I took one of my hard to retract cylinders to the only hydraulic repair shop that would consider rebuilding it. They took one look and said they don’t work on that type of cylinder. HWH and the motor home industry doesn’t care about this kind of issue that is common in older RV’s. I had to buy a new one for $570.

HWH does have a "rebuild" option for a hundred or so dollars lower. Send it in and they'll tell you if it can be rebuilt.

It's called "Red rust" and caused by rain & snow exposure. I find the electrostatic attraction of dust & moisture to the exposed "shiny" ram...is best solved by merely doing a cleaning "wipe-down" with a generous amount of Wd-40. Followed by a dry clean rag & final coat of ATF to the exposed ram. If I am in stormy, rainy conditions with the jacks "Down", I always clean the Rams as mentioned above, before I break camp. You will be surprised at the "invisible" amount of dust and grime that attaches itself to the machined "shiny" surface of the ram. Additionally: Four times a year I do a more thorough "wipe-down" in which I spray upwards into the base of the housing with WD-40. This to clean any debris on the "C" rings. I wipe the seal with a WD-40 soaked Q-tip, followed by another, then a third until it comes back clean and free of grime. ...Most Rv'ers are not about to (or agile enough) to crawl under and do this amount of cleaning. I suggest you fashion some sore of extension tool with a cloth-clad end shaped in a curvature so as to allow you to "reach" the jack without crawling under the coach. I have a velcro-faced end on a two-foot wood paddle. Have several cut-down pieces of micro-fiber towel that peel-and-stick onto the end as they become soiled. >> >>>even if you don't wipe 'em down as thoroughly as I do, you still can benefit from any degree of wiping that you do ....as opposed to no attempt whatsoever! Hope this is of some benefit to viewers. Stay safe out there!

Thanks very much. Is it possible to take this apart without cutting? Is the sleeve fixed in place at the bottom of the cylinder? Still trying to figure out just how this thing goes together. Hoping to take it apart and clean out that rust.
