Been drumming since 95. In my short time on Earth, I have very few people I look up to nowadays for many particular reasons. Jeff is one of those people that, even in his death, he still continues to captivate many, including me. What a gentleman, and a legend. Rest in POWER, Jeff! We love you! Hell, the WHOLE Porcaro family is a gift to us!

This isn’t video of the performance we are hearing. What’s up with that? There are clearly moments where there are cymbal crashes in the audio but he doesn’t hit them. There is also a tom roll he visually plays but we don’t hear it. I suspect we are watching a different take.

I've looked at a couple of these videos where you see Jeff playing a rehearsal and then hear the final take. One of the interesting things is that the final take is always simpler than the rehearsal; less busy fills and slightly stripped down groove. That says a lot about Jeff as a drummer and what his priorities were. A great lesson!

Toto, as an almost perfect embodiment of 80s excess, have never been known for tasteful restraint. But the idea to take this pensive, sad song and turn it into some sort of turbo charged, chorus soaked hair anthem is up there with the great bad ideas in music history. How about an Yngwie Malmsteen / Eddie Van Halen cover of "For No One"?

For those who may not have noticed, he is doing an overdub in this take. Notice at times cymbal shimmers and even certain crashes that he diesnt play here but are in the audio. The trick shown here is that he is laying a duplicate ontop of another take.bthe reason for this is probably bto have a take which has a settled groove throughout amd the over lay of the more expressive and free previous take was to allow dept and layer for the song . When you fill more often and break the groove pattern in order to add more ornamentation the groove can be noticeable broken and even stilted. The iremedy then is to track a busy and free drum take and then after a more conservative and groove centric take. The engineer will either splice the parts he wishes for the final production or even like here layer the two performances atop each other with proper and appropriate levels of the overlapping takes. Watch again the start of the groove, there are cymbal shimmers and hits that he isnt playing here but is clearly his playing on a backing track prerecording.vits excellent stuff both in terms of drum playing and writing along with production wiseom and studio know how

Thank you so much for sharing this video🥰. Jeff was not just a musican, to this day I keep trying to figure out his uniqness, diversity, his special taste, literally like every time he touched the drums, the music turned to gold. I hate to say it, but Toto wasn't the same band without him.

Hey @jp. I totally agree! He had something really special and I‘ve also spent many years trying to work out how he did what he did. The only thing I can come up with is that he was born with that ‘golden feel’! I could listen to his grooves and fills all day!! 👍
