Nice, my 1600E had a 3.0v6 engine, painted mine black block and heads and blue mink valve covers to match body colors, put steel timing gears in after fiber cam gear lost some teeth, reliable units but heavy, ( blocks were originally designed for a diesel unit)

No, it's not a mustang engine. It's a 3.0 V6 engine called an Essex, because it originated in Essex somewhere in Britain. However they were also available in Germany. They were also produced in South Africa from the early 1970s to 2000. Incidentally, South Africa built the most powerful of those engines.

Nice...very nice indeed!!!........long ways better than the cologne V6! The Essex v6 is a higher revving motor than the cologne. It wa s actually designed to be interchangeable with a diesel set-up, but Ford never got around to producing the diesel variant.
@Your2TiminEx

Rubbish! The Essex V6 is not known to be a revvy engine - in fact quite the opposite that's why it was interchangeable with a Diesel, the Essex engine has a lot of low down torque but is definitely not a high revving engine that's for sure - unless major money is spent on it

@Runeakb
4 жыл бұрын
Why was it bad?
@betsaaida45
4 жыл бұрын
@@Runeakb It was a flop due to being prone to blowing top/ head gaskets. Ford ended up discontinuing. it. Until a back yard tinkerer figured out that some of the top bolts bottomed out. It was thus impossible to torque the bolts evenly. He drilled out the holes and Bob's your uncle! Evenly torqued top bolts, no more blown head gaskets, but it was too little too late. In was in actual fact a marvelous little motor. Little brother of the Essex V6. This was originally a 2.5l motor, but with different pistons & new heads this was upped to 3.0l. Same applied to the V4, explaining the existence of 1.7 & 2.0l variants. I personally owned 6 vehicles with the V6 3.0l in my younger years in South Africa. Except for blown head gaskets every two years or so (slack upkeep of antifreeze), it was lovely motors to work on. As an example, it will blow a LH top gasket, you only replace the LH top gasket, oil/ oil filter & fill up the radiator with clean water. Up en running in two hours max!!!!

@ronnie doorzon The Cologne version was available in smaller capacities 1300/1500 (92 cubic inch) and later a 1700 I think? The Essex in 1700/2000. Some early Cologne versions had sleeved bores. There is nothing interchangeable between the Cologne and the Essex engine, the Cologne has the distributor at the rear, the Essex has the distributor at the front. The Cologne engine was also in the Saab 95.

But at least if they did go, the pistons didn't smash into the valves like modern engines do when the belt/chain breaks. A small clue if the oil pump to dizzy driveshaft was starting to fail (ie round off) was that the oil light would light very briefly when taking a bend sharply.

1.7 or 2.0, transit had low compression heads, corsair, zephyr, capri have flat heads, weak parts oil pump and distributor drive, main bearings marginal due to compressed design to fit transit, always cooling issues... Corsair and Capri V4 HT have tuned headers and twin choke weber vs. FMOCO carb from Belfast, best to set valve clearances with hot running engine at Ford we modified cam covers to be open for this....

Spot on Gary! I've yet to meet anyone with anything good to say re. the V4 Essex. The dist. and oil pump drives were truly laughable. I don't know what Ford were thinking of. I recall (Nov.1973 having just passed my test) driving a Mk1Transit (1.7 Essex) way overloaded with 1974 'glamour photo' calendars. Only 6 miles to destination but I'm still amazed I got there intact: The back end was firmly down on the bump stops. On the way back from the delivery it felt (by comparison) like driving a sports car. When I later made a calculation, a van designed to carry 18 cwt was loaded with over 3 imperial tons, and (by volume) there was a lot of empty space in it.

they were a horrible motor, typical british weirdness , why why ?,i had a 73 v4 gt in umber orange i think it was called with a black vinyl roof and a 4sp manual box, most of the v4s were chucked away for the 2ltr straight 4 or the 3ltr and ltr the 2.8ltr v6 so i kept the v4, made a good profit when i sold it tho.
@Ampex196

Yes, ... it's a healthy (as can be) example of a truly 'horrible motor'. The Essex V6 was seriously flawed in many respects. By chopping off two cylinders then adding a balance shaft to prevent it from shaking itself to pieces, Ford managed to make an engine with the dynamics of a three legged camel.
