Steve Kekana
Steve Kekana born 1958, lost his sight at the age of 5 due to Trachoma. Kekana began singing at an early age and, when he was 11, it was his wish to emulate Babsy Mlangeni. In the latter half of 1977 he joined the late Kgagudi to form an amateur group called Hunters at Driekop in the Burgersfort district.While performing he was discovered by talent scout and producer Tom Vuma, who became his manager. Steve won the 1979 & 1980 SABC Black Music Award for Best Male Vocalist.He recorded his first English album, Don’t Stop The Music in 1981.The album was the soundtrack of the film of the same name (or Ezomculo), in which he starred.In that year he was chosen as Radio Zulu’s Top Male Vocalist. Kekana has, to date, recorded more than 23 albums & garnered no fewer than 70 Gold Discs! Kekana is a holder of Bluris and LLB degrees. In part fulfilment of his LLB, he wrote a dissertation on copyright entitled Copyright Infringement On Musical Works in South Africa (the Songwriter’s Perspective).
