Anyone complaining about the math in this video is not appreciating the gold nuggets in here. If nothing else, the fact that the 3:8 ratio is not widely known or widely taught blows my mind. 98% of the banking tutorials on KZitem only focus on 2:1 rolling banks. Dr. Dave is one of the few other people I’m aware of that has coached on sliding banks, and even those systems are just 2:1 to 3:8 conversions; they don’t actually teach you the 3:8 track line principle. I for one learned something new, although personally I’d rather whip out my phone to find 3/8ths of my near rail origination number to find my far rail target number. Cuts out all the pesky memorization. I also don’t think it’s that hard to just memorize 8-16-24-32-40, and then multiply the unit number (in multiples of 8) by three to get the corresponding target number. It’s too bad there’s no reliable visual system for 3:8 banks, although Dr.Dave’s twice-plus-tenths is not bad at all. Thanks for the video!

Hey Matt! I have been studying Poolology for about a month now, and like it for the shots that are 30 and in. Having trouble with zone A longer shots. Do you have any advice? I live in Cleveland and would be willing to come down and work with you for the day if available? Thanks, Ted.

No. I don’t. He hit so many balls and played so many games he never needed to…he can just see it and feel it (right brain…like most top pros) which is superior as long as you have the time to hit a million balls. Nevertheless you have to start somewhere so you have a baseline for what you visualize and how to adjust accordingly. Beating balls randomly with no base reference will slow the process dramatically.

Im new to poolology but eager to learn. Thankyou for attempting to explain it further. Can i just ask if there is any significance in choosing 25 yard line? Is this a American football reference. Why is it so important? Is 25 a ref to alignment or positional values. Sorry if this is obvious. I watched a few times before posting
@MattyInTheNati

No significance. Just challenging enough you can’t do it on the first try and not to challenging to make it impossible. And Yes. It’s an American football reference. I assume most people have heard about the CB landing on the 50 yd line so I assumed viewers knew what coming to rest on the 25 yd line meant. I wasn’t trying to confuse you. I swear.

Matt - as a frustrated level 4 pool player and not feeling like I am getting any better I need to change my aiming system or more precisely come up WITH an aiming system and I have now spent a week on Fractional Aiming. I have the poolology book and have it 1/2 way read and really appreciate your video here. I for one will be committed to the system and devouring your videos for the next several months digesting and applying. I would like to set up my table for practicing these shots like you have at 13:48-15:50 but I am a bit confused as to how to lay out the dots. Do you have a more detailed video on just this aspect on setting up the dots?
@MattyInTheNati
Жыл бұрын
Watch the Art of Poolology video to see a better illustration of the dots for practicing a 25 yd line shot. You could pick any location on the table to setup a “practice” dot…after all an OB could end up anywhere, but the other dots for setting up the CB dot are always anywhere along the CB-OB-Golf Tee line. And the Golf Tee locations are always fractions of the OB yard-line relative to the pocket. Once you get the concept setting up the Golf Tees the CB dots will be easy. I promise.

Thanks for this. I have always had a hard time visualizing the ghost ball. The poolology system is an incredible eye opener for players starting out (and maybe even for those that are still having a hard time finding the aim point). I know everyone eventually shoots by feel but I agree with you. This system brings you there much faster.

Everyone is looking for "the system" including me. I learned with ghost ball in my teens. After watching several convoluted systems (including Brian's), I've found that ghost ball is the answer. If you don't even play that much, the memory required in these systems is laughable. Yet Brian brags on his systems because half ball hit (the easiest since half ball hit has a direct aiming point of object ball edge) is great for noobies is great..... And ghost ball requires visualization. And 1/8, 1/4, 3/8 etc require visualization and memorization. And when you add deflection and throw and english, forget it.......... Ghost ball is arithmetic and systems become calculus for the advanced player.... I think systems are "pros designing basic math for beginners," because the system guys NEVER tell me ghost ball is wrong or bad, and advocate their system for a noobie off the street. AKA they sell gimmicks.
@capoman1

15:50 _Perfect system..._ There is still execution and the complexities, like speed throw deflection etc. So even if there was a book that told us "the algorighm of golf/tennis/baseball," you still have to execute and that is a variable of its own. So execution is fun to watch and is a variable obviously.

You can see this clearly when you play online pool with aim guidelines. Effectively, every player has nearly perfect aim. When I play, it is obvious if my opponent has never really played pool on a physical table. While almost everyone can cut thin end to end shots even professionals will miss but you can spot non real pool players when they shoot simple shots with no regard for position on the next shots.

I learned ghost ball from espn in the 90s and grew up in pool halls. Was AMAZED that one single answer represents the final answer FOR ALL SHOTS. It allowed me to prevail and not require calculus.

I've sparred with Brian on his videos. I laugh that ghost ball is use TO REFER TO HIS SYSTEM. I laugh because ghost ball is THE ANSWER. And his system sets up an different system that still requires visualization TO PROVE his system. GHOST BALL IS THE ONE ANSWER that eliminates "systems." Study ghost ball if you don't know it and you'll laugh at how many systems are set up just to mimic it.

@capoman1

@@danender5555 1/8 and 1/4 ball require imaginary reference, no difference. Ghost ball is one reference, this calculus of remembering which fraction is 1 million times more difficult than "imagine this ball" vs "imagine 1/8 or 3/8 ball or 7/8 ball. These systems are so a pro could sell something to novices.

I bought poolology last weekend. Your approach got me started on how to practice what I found in the book. Thanks for that. I place the object ball somewhere on the 25 yard line (let's say close to the short rail), and shoot each bread crumbs ... then pick another spot (2 to 3 inches farther from the short rail), shoot each bread crumbs, etc. So, it's more than 48 shots when I do it. Now when I play, I can't avoid looking at a ball's position value, the alignment with imagined bread crumbs, and determining what fraction I should use. You (and the author) mention that this is a method to get to the point of seeing all shots sooner than having to shoot the 1,000,000 proverbial balls. I'm somewhat concerned that it becomes a crutch. That I don't eventually internalize the shots and will always need to do these calculations. So, I'm making sure that, after doing the math, I also visualize what the shot looks like and convincing my brain that the shot is correct. Any thoughts on this? Regards, Bertin

Could you please explain the drill a little further? Where is the number 48 coming from? Probably obvious, watched the vid several times but still don't get it. So, at each breadcrumb, you are shooting 1 - 7, yes? You've put tons of work into these videos and it shows - very well done!!! Thanks man!!
@MattyInTheNati

Yes…it’s my one regret about the video not explaining the drill better. You’re not the only one to complain. The opening sequence shows a small demo of the drill, but the animation didn’t emphasize the fact you should move onto the next breadcrumb after pocketing the ball from the current breadcrumb. So in the video I illustrate #3 breadcrumb from ball-in-hand position and did not show the next breadcrumb in the sequence…#4. Anyway 8x6 = 48. There are six different sets of eight breadcrumbs. Two along the short rails (for the corner pockets) and 4 along the long rails (2 for the side pocket and 1 for each of the corner pockets). Sorry for the confusion.

Good video. I'm on the fence about picking up the poolology book; aiming systems are fun, but the danger is the "game" can become the calculation of the aiming system instead of the actual game on the table. Aligning to the contact point isn't usually that hard, you stand behind the object ball and pocket and see where you need to aim for the contact point then you execute with consistent, proper mechanics. My experience in pool is you need to think less not more, turn your brain off and get into the zone; aiming systems tend to interrupt the subconscious flow. In my opinion, cue control is much more important; make every shot simple with good cue ball position.

Had the book for a while and your system of finding the 8ths and working my way up to the shot from there made the whole thing much more workable. If you tell me how to support the cause ($), I'll do my part. But in the name of GOD do you have to talk so damn FAST? I'm available to read your script at South Carolina speed and help stop the drawlers out there from wearing out the mouse trying to hit pause and figure out what the hell you just said before you say three more things. But love the content and hope eventually to get most of it. Thanx.

John...you are not the fist person to comment about the speed of audio, but I promise the MP4 I uploaded to KZitem I am NOT talking that fast...even for folks for South Carolina :-). I have noticed it plays faster on mobile devices and cell phones than when playing from a computer. I'm curious if you watched it on a mobile device? I think KZitem is speeding it up somehow, but I can't figure it out how or why. Anyway I can make the MP4 available to you, but it' is HUGE...like 1.1 Gigs so I would have to copy it somewhere. No need to support the cause...I'm good. I'm just glad you like it...just wish you could see it at normal speed.
