Why is everyone constantly babbling about the arithmetic? The point of Tau is that it is more _intuitive,_ and it makes much more sense in regards to how math is usually treated, since almost everything is based on radii.

τ is more directly related to the number of periods, and this makes more sense for people who start learning trigonometry --- it is irrelevant what mathematicians think about the arithmetic.

Circles do not have a centre ,therefore do not have a radius .Thats why the "Zero" literaly does not exist and why it is depicted as a circle. Zero is not a number and has no place in mathematics. Pi is also irrelevant as it attempts to compare a radius number( a non existent quantity) to a circumference.

Why is tau twice the value, but the symbol is only half. Shouldn't it be ππ?
@RafaelCosta-oi3be

A diameter is always a necessary element of a circle, but not a radius; if you try to detach a radius from a circle you simply create a new circumference. Pi is pi, tau is just two times pi, not the other way around; it's nothing.

The very only reason I don't support this at the moment is due to the choice of the symbol. τ (tau) is one of the most used greek symbols in many physics disciplines, including mine, as I'm frequently running into a popularity clash between its use as a (generalized) torque, wrench and time constant. The original suggestion for "tau" was a "pi" with three legs, which has the advantage that it hasn't already got another definition, but the disadvantage is that it's not a standardized symbol (nobody knows how to type it except for LaTeX gurus). How about just redefining pi? Or, if that might lead to confusion, a boldfaced pi instead (and underlined in handwriting)? But wait, why do we even want to make it look like pi? Since we are talking about circles, we might instead consider using a symbol that looks like one. Perhaps an omicron or theta instead? Maybe not theta, because (1) it is already overly popular like tau and (2) it ironically seems to suggest the definition of pi instead (full stripe). The omicron instead is not popular at all; does it instead look too much like an o, and if so, is this even an issue? Does it even need to be a greek symbol? Going on a limb here... How about a unicode power symbol (IEC 60417-5009), consisting of half a stripe (radius) combined with a circle? Etc. Etc. Just throwing some ideas around, but please get rid of the symbol tau.

If you already know a bit of math, it shouldn't really matter much to you. The biggest benefits of Tau are all about teachability. Tau simply makes things like sine/cosine and radians easier to understand for students new to the concepts.
@Peter_1986
Жыл бұрын
@@Zeturic This is a point that a lot of people in here seem to not grasp; Tau is not about "convenient arithmetic", it is about the fact that it makes more sense for people who start studying trigonometry, since it perfectly corresponds to the number of periods. Heck, you can almost think of Tau AS the unit "period", since the number of Tau radians is literally the number of periods.

50:52 it's 710/113, sadly this is only slightly more memorable version of the 355/113 approximation of pi. Though there are some best integer approximations that come close that didn't exist for pi, like 377.0/60 but this is accurate to the 4th place. And 710/113 is accurate up to the 7th for one additional digit. It's also an approximation for pi tho. But, so accurate you need to get all the way to 52163/8302 to finally get something better.
There is sqrt(sqrt(17144/11)), but that's kinda cheating.

Those fractions are good aproximations for tau. An even better fraction is 710/113. It gives you 6 decimal digits of precision. The 103 993/16 551 fraction you gave has eight decimal digits of precision, but its a bit long.
