Your video is great. You explained how to change the brake very thoroughly. I have to change the brake pads on my 2009 highlander basic model. I feel relieved and comfortable to do the job after watching your video. Thanks so much.

Keith, thank you so much for this tutorial. My wife's highlander's brakes were starting to squeal, and after seeing your video, I decided to go ahead and spend the $200 for a quality floor jack and jack stands and do the job myself. Got the front and rear pads for ~$75, a mechanic's stool for $25 and an impact socket for my driver for the lugs, and with the help of your video I did the job this morning. Not only did I ultimately save money on this first fix, which "cost" me ~$300, but now I have the equipment needed to continue doing simple repairs myself. God Bless all the you tubers that post these how-to videos, you all are awesome!

Thank you so much for watching and commenting. That's what it's all about my friend... passing along information for others to benefit. At a shop or dealership, this job can easily cost you $400-$600 of your hard earned money! As you learn other diy projects and buy more tools, you'll soon be doing things you wouldn't have ever tried. Happy wrenching!

Hi Keith, Do I have to take off the cap from the brake reservoir when pushing down the piston? Thanks..
@keithmeddock1243
8 жыл бұрын
Hi....No you shouldn't have to remove the cap from the reservoir. It's up to you if you want to remove it. Your dealing with a simple hydraulic system. The reality is you are not moving that much fluid so in turn, you're not creating any pressure build up when pushing the pistons back it. Thanks for the question!

I don't have a "C" Clamp to push the pistons back into the calipers, is there anything else I can use/do to push them back?
@keithmeddock1243
9 жыл бұрын
+Big Kev Comedy ... Sorry I'm just getting to your question. You can try to use anything that will allow you to push the pistons back inside the caliper. Maybe a large pair of channel lock pliers would work. Channel Lock is a brand name so a large pair of adjustable pliers. However, you can pick up a c clamp at your local hardware store and they aren't very expensive. Maybe under $10. Thank you for watching!

Great video. Incredibly helpful. I noticed that you did not put any anti-squeal on the brakes. Would it be a waste for me to put this on my Highlander brakes when I change them? Thanks again. This really is a great video, and I will definatelly use it when I change my breaks.

I apologize for not answering your question a year ago when you asked it! If you get anti squeal lubricant with your new brakes, I would put it on. It will not typically stop your brakes from working correctly, but brake dust can build up and typically when metal on metal surfaces move a little against each other, you get noise (like when a train stops, metal wheels on steel tracks= squeals). Anti squeal lube is applied to the metal surface of the brake pad assembly. Try not to get anything on the pad itself or the rotor/drum surfaces as oils and lubes can reduce the efficiency of the brake to perform its function. I don't say that to scare you thinking your car will not stop, but oils can catch on fire as the brakes build a lot of heat when they stop your car. Thank you for watching and for your question.

You happen to know the torque specs for the calipers and brackets?
@keithmeddock1243
9 жыл бұрын
dmerced257 Hi, thanks for watching. Typically, I just run them in til they stop, then give a light snug by hitting the ratchet handle with the palm of my hand. From the best I can find for torque specs, the two caliper mounting bolts should be 25 ft lbs. Here is a link to a forum site that is awesome for the DIYer. This link is to a thread for a brake job on a highlander. I couldn't find the actual year model but I just did a quick search. Here is the link.... www.toyotanation.com/forum/122-2nd-generation-2008-2013/455185-diy-replacing-front-brake-pads.html I hope this helps.

PATRICK HUFF Hi Patrick. Initially I would say yes. I don't have any manuals for this vehicle. They only made repair manuals from the dealer and they are several hundred dollars to obtain. I used to work as a mechanic so I tend to just dig in to what I want to do. From any research I've done, it appears that '08, '09 and '10 models should be the same. Don't be afraid to pull a wheel off and look to see if things look the same as in this video!

keith meddock I would say all the way to 2014 models. Even tho the front looks different, mechanically they are identical. The 2015 is a different animal. I think you need the funky looking tool for the '07 and back. Man, just watching your breath made me cold. Thanks a lot for the info. I will use it when I change my breaks on my '10.

dmerced257 Thank you for the information. It's good to know what vehicles this will work on. I don't think I mentioned this. If you do all four brakes the same day, check your brake fluid reservoir to make sure that when you push the pistons back into the calipers you are not overflowing the reservoir.n If you do spill some out, just be sure to fill it to the fill line after you press the brake pedal a couple times.

Great video! I do have question about the rotors. I have a 2008 Sport HL and my rotors are not very smooth. I would like to have them resurface. I would need to remove the housing assembly that holds the calipers correct? Just two bolts? Once removed I can pop off the rotors, correct? Also, do I need that special tool for the rear pistons for my 2008? Thanks!
@keithmeddock1243
9 жыл бұрын
Hara Smith I am so sorry I haven't got back to you and your question! Okay, After you remove the brake caliper assembly and hang it up out of your way, I think you will need to remove the bracket that remains. It should be bolted on behind the rotor on the hub assembly somewhere. After you remove that, rotor should come right off. You may try to remove the rotor before removing the bracket, there may be enough clearance to get the rotor off. Not sure on the tool for rear pistons for your specific vehicle without seeing them.

Thanks Keith for the tutorial. I drove from Georgia back to New York and ( thank God it happened when we got back home) my brakes started making sounds as if something broke ( I'm getting rattling sounds whenever I apply the brake). My daddy used to ride a bicycle so I have very little to no experience on automobiles. I gain knowledge from watching unselfish people like you who provide videos and share with people like me.Thank You again.

Thank you for watching. As with most DIY projects, you can save lots of $$$. I only try to give you a better understanding of not only what you are doing but also how things in there work. If you understand how things work, you are more comfortable in choosing whether to attempt this type of repair. There are several videos on here that show brake jobs. But I didn't find many that really explain in detail the components and how they work on this vehicle. Thank you again for watching!

Thank you for watching and commenting! As explained in response to EARL Mercado, I wanted to help someone understand how things work. I can easily show how to replace brake pads, but if I can help you understand how those parts work together to stop your car, you gain knowledge in addition to confidence in your attempt to save $$$. I'm glad you found this helpful. And with the $$$ you save, you can buy more tools...! Happy wrenching my friend!
