we used to take this summertime getting to Algoma, but after years overseas thereafter, we came back to take it (one way) right across the continent, and to our delight - ! - a rockslide had occured just east of Winnipeg, and so a 900-mile detour ensued that involved as much as waking up to hugging L Superior's gobsmackingly gorgeous north shore for hundreds of miles of dual tracking, all to reapproach that grand dame of the prairies there along some other tangent

we yobs used to party in dome cars when this fleet used to be stabled overnight in Westmount's Glen Yard...the yanks'd staff their daily Amtrak overnight alongside us in the adjacent siding, and -- happily -- they had never e v e r spied us 🍸

Each car has a bathroom on both sides. There are up to 2 or 3 dining cars on each train. The car with a dome you see at 1:00 is would be the first dining car, and the videographer is filming from the dome area of the second dining car. The place you sleep depends on your ticket. In economy, you can only sleep in your seat. In upper/lower berth, you get 1 of 2 benches that fold into a bunk bed, with a curtain for privacy from the hallway. If you get a sleeper cabin, then you get a room to yourself.

this video is really disappointing. i know there is more scenery than you showed with the camera being focused either forward or backward on top of the train and scenery is why i wanted too watch. and not a single song of Gordon Lightfoot. shame.

@ 24:04 perfect edit! The next song after always reminds me of sitting at the Dentist with my Mom so many years ago in Sault Ste. Marie lol...it seemed to be playing a lot then and it always had that refined professional image of our time and fitting to be blasting through the Northern Ontario finest in the crisp winter air.

This train was originally called the "Super Continental". It follows the CN route that runs north of the original Canadian Pacific route. The Rocky Mountaineer takes the more scenic route through the Rockies, including Banff and the Spiral Tunnels, however a part of the CP route that's almost as scenic is the run from Sault Ste.. Marie to Thunder Bay that runs beside Lake Huron and Lake Superior this is the original route of the Canadian. The CP line also runs from Winnipeg to Calgary through the Saskatchewan capital of Regina. Greyhound has just eliminated their Western Canada service-there are now a great many people who are stuck. Other problems: 1. The Canadian only runs twice a week. 2. The Canadian used to originate in both Toronto AND Montreal. The Montreal section also serviced the national capital of Ottawa. The two sections would connect in Sudbury and continue west...and the opposite would happen with the eastbound train-now people from Eastern Canada (as well as Montreal and Ottawa have to travel an extra five hours out of their way to Toronto VIA Rail treats its runs as more of a tourist service than (what is now) an essential part of western Canada travel. I have stood at the Trans Canada Highway observation station and watched CP freight trains passing through the Spiral Tunnels. It's like watching rush hour traffic, alternating between east and westbound trains...but VIA Rail really needs to get back to the table with CP to regain access to the southern route. With the end of bus service even a "short haul" system on a daily basis would be preferable. There are connecting tracks between Regina-Saskatoon and Calgary-Edmonton as well as a southern route through British Columbia. The mountain route does not have to compete with the Rocky Mountaineer.if it runs as a short-haul service (eg-Winnipeg to Regina, Regina to Saskatoon, Regina to Calgary,, Calgary to Edmonton and Calgary to Banff). Look at Japan.

These cars are the CPR cars that were purchased for the Canadian when it first started on CPR on the CP main line which is the southern route that runs through Calgary, Banff and Lake Louise. CN bought their own cars that ran on the Super Continental on the more northern CN line. The Super Continental was discontinued in 1990 and the Canadian was moved to the CN route.

Whoops, did I miss something? I thought the title said that this was "Winter 2015?" Great scenery, the soundtrack was fine and the terrain and many passes with other freights was also neat. However, I think you've convinced me that when we take the Canadian, it will be just westerly from either Calgary or Edmonton to Vancouver. I'm still convinced that the ride northwards from N. Vancouver to Whistler, Lillooet and up the Fraser River canyon all the way to Prince George is still your best scenery. How sad that the BC government pulled the plug on BC Rail and the tourism has suffered greatly in BC.

Beautiful video, beautiful music. This is most likely the greatest train ride in the world. If Russia and Australia had any sense they would add dome cars to their long distance trains.
