It's truly a masterpiece of a film and you can tell by how there is no good and bad like you said, most characters work for a good cause in their view and they all make mistakes, you can make the case that either side is bad or good and it really makes you think about what is important in life, what you should strive for and how you should live. And besides all that, it also didn't have a satisfying ending. And that's a good thing, because life most of the times isn't satisfying or ending well, and that's when it can teach you the most. Now in my honest opinion, I don't view both sides of aggression as equal hence I don't think that the eyes unclouded by hate message of the film is really great. Iron town is essentially a town run by the outcasts of society with the women being empowered and having jobs and equal treatment and the lepers being reintegrated into society, but this doesn't change the fact that they are attacking the ecosystem and home of thousands of animals and organisms. And we can really resonate with them because they are given a voice this time. The animals and the environment in general is simply trying to live and the humans one the other side are trying to dominate it, and take its life and vitality away to fuel their town and others. You simply cannot equate the hatred of the aggressor and that of the entity that is resisting the aggression. One is justified and the other isn't.

The difference between Disney and Miyosaki's films stems from the fact that America is a Christian country and Japan is Buddhist. Christian churches, especially the Catholic ones, demanded that clearly good people overcame clearly evil people. The stories echoed Christ's triumph over evil. Buddhists have a more realistic view of the world, one that is not either/or like Christianity.
This was my first Miyazaki film, and it will forever be my favorite.

There is a world that we all belong to and it is streaming parallel to our world. There emotions are more convincing than logic. The purer a heart is the more succesful is the person. People never lie there as no one can lie. People can see the inner being of everyone. Miyazaki pictures that world. He has been there and he can depict it for us.

I think you’re wrong. I feel like it’s pretty obvious that lady Eboshi is supposed to be somewhat of a villain in the movie. She has many really good qualities, but that doesn’t make all her other actions against the forest and life in general less evil. She is a realistic and complex character with a good side, but her main mission still is to destroy nature and everything else in her way for the benifit of her people. At the core, it seems like she is basically just a metaphor for humanity, killing everything and anyone in your way for your selfish pursuit of power and influence, while still being able to show compassion to your people tho. I also believe it is really unfair to put her on the same moral level as San. While San is a bit ignorant of the human’s fates, ultimately Lady Eboshi is the one who started all this. Everything San does is just a reaction to Eboshi’s crimes against the forest and it’s inhabitants, and i even believe that she is correct for trying to stop these actions with violence, because, let’s be honest, Lady Eboshi would never take anything else seriously. And even while Ashitaka actively chooses not to go this route, he still openly condems Eboshi’s plans and actions through the whole movie. He isn’t as directly affected by Eboshi’s actions as San is, which is why he doesn’t use violence against her like San does, but for example in the opening scene we can see that he also actively chooses violence against opponents if directly affected. Just becausecharacters have nuances and conflicting qualities, does not mean that they are morally neutral. Other than the deer god maybe, who seems to be 50/50 equally as destructive as life-giving.

Same. She sacrificed her men to be blown up in the battle with the boars. She kills the Spirit of the Forest and destroyed the forest and nearly all the humans with it. At the end, she plans to do it all again. No remorse. No redemption. Just a manipulative woman who wants control at all costs.

I've only seen 4 Studio Ghibli films: My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Spirited away, and Ponyo. I could say Ponyo is my favorite but I feel like Nostalgia could been clouding my mind a bit, But Princess Mononoke is definitely My Favorite SG Film, and that's with eyes unclouded. It's a Genuinely Amazing film, and it shows peace in its purest and hatred in different ways, whither it be nature or man. And how Man should live with nature and understand peace instead of distorying it of its beauty.

I loved the video. It's my second favourite film of all time. But at the end there you said, "...even though the world will never be wholly good..." I suspect this is because of the existence of the demon of hatred and of greed. But what about the serpent in the garden isn't good, last I remember it was very good.

Finally I found one who also has this movie as his favourite of all time. Back in the day it was such a eye opener..the lessons about love, hate, nature and that you can have love for another person without the need for it to be physical like all the damn Disney movies. I know it sounds corny but especially the early Ghibli movies really had an impact on who I have become.. not like world changing but they are have just been the jumping point to broaden my character, my view on the world and a more different Ristes view on myself and interactions with others.. it is amazing to me.. to this day.. how something like a movie can have such a positive impact on your life.
