What would I use to connect headphones to the Model 80?

I would habitually record into the red back when I had 4-track cassette. I do have a Yamaha cassette 4-track which works perfectly even today, but I barely use it. I'm spoiled to being able to undo it if I accidentally erased something. That cassette 4-track is much better sounding than any other one I've been thru for some reason. The sound quality is THIS close to reel tape, I'm sure. I'm remembering why I seldom use it - it has a funky layout. It only has an overall EQ, you can't EQ trax individually. Anyway, with 4-tracks, I could record really far into the red before the bad kind of distortion happened. Recording that way on analog would excite the track and made it sound harmonically interesting. I began doing that after I read somewhere back in the 80s that the original blues masters during the 50s liked to book time at Chess studio (as in Chess Records), because they did things that were unconventional for the time, such as blasting into the red, which helped acoustic-based blues sound more powerful. I took that to heart, lol.

I lusted so hard for a Fostex 8-channel analog reel machine in the music store back in the early 90s. I used cassette 4-tracks then. Now that I have actual money and could afford it, it's long gone unless I want to risk buying a used one which will be all crippled and need to be in the repair shop half the time. DAWs and hardware multitracks, thank God for those now, but I just want that Fostex because it looked so cool, lol. I notice you're able to work around not having an actual recording mixer that doesn't have separate ins and outs per channel? I kind of didn't know that was possible. You're pretty resourceful.

Your machine sounds great. Although I didn't like when you distorted the bass it still sounds great and is your preference. It sounded great clean. Thank you for sharing. Thumbs up for me
I love analog recordings, especially for jazz material.

So when you say "Always pan odds left and evens right..." you can actually avoid that if you get a mixer with direct outs or inserts (Preferably direct outs) and on an 8 track, you can condense 10 drum tracks down to one. (Maybe by using a "post fader" aux send that you send each channel out of and back into another track that gets sent to one track on the reel to reel. Just keep in mind you WILL need to "pre mix" the drums while the drummer is actually playing. That means your panning, EQ (Which I tend not to use because I like to use mic color), gating (again, I don't use because I like to blend the drums together), compression and volumes are set as they will sound in the final recording. Also goes if you're using more than one mic on guitar. Check your speakers, headphones and whatever else on all volumes and make sure your parallel limiting is set on lead instruments so they don't fade. In other words, I suggest investing in a good board and a few outboard effects like compressors.)

Where do you get the tapes from

Tape is available the original machines were factory biased for Ampex 457 type which is long gone but the equivalent today is RTM LPR 35 not sure of your location so you'll need to google it for suppliers, here in the UK I get mine from Thomann..

There are two manufacturers ATR and RTM that still make tape, its not cheap (although 1/4 inch is a *hell* of a lot cheaper than 1/2 inch, 1 inch and 2 inch which can set you back well over $500 a reel. 1/4 should go for around $50 a 7 inch reel to around $70 a 10 inch reel. These recorders only take 5 inch and 7 inch reels so that narrows it down a lot.

Hey Jed, I got the same machine but recently have some trouble with rewinding. It seems as though the motor can't handle it. Slowing down when stopping also doesn't work as it should. Any ideas?

it needs a service. try and find a studio near you that still uses tape. they may have their machines serviced. it sounds like the motors.

I dont think its your machine. Most likely your tapes may need baking due to sticky tape syndrome . Eg oxide shedding . Happens to a lot of old reels . Been restoring these for years .

you have to check the capacitors of your motor, it's easy to change, or check the belt of the reel table

Thumbs up Jed! With regards to the mixer I assume a 16 channel mixer would solve all the swapping of cables with an 8 track machine? using a snake loom?

all the ins and outs on the m80 are an rca connection, so you need rca to jack to connect your desk

Cool. I am looking to get one from craigslist. I'd be curious to hear how it sounds with the audio recorde d directly to the video.
