The 98 Tcat had 172 hp and 200 cc more than anything else, I ran the 98 Tcat for years, stock class, reduced the pitch on the track, DD clutch kit with Polaris weights and a Polaris red spring, a 25 tooth top sprocket, had a 98 Mach Z an SRX 700, and if it was a stock sled, none of them even came close on an ice track, or ice, or enough room to stretch the legs, half mile I could get just over 120, and there wasn’t a stock 800 that would pull 115, I’m in Maine, and seen thousands of sleds run every weekend, the 98 Tcat was king until,the 4 strokes came along, period, that video you can see the rider on the cat was scared was stuck on an unpacked trail, when the Polaris had the hard pack every time, and it was only about 400’, I’m not partial to any sled, just telling what I saw every weekend back in the late 90s and early 2000s

How do those late 90s Thundercats fare against modern stuff like the Sidewinder? I live in the northeast and grew up riding sleds in the late 90s/early 2000s but (sadly) have been away from the sport for almost 20 years. It’s crazy how complex/expensive sleds have gotten, I’d like to think the old 2 stroke beasts from back in my day still hold their own 😂
@chrisbrann7733

@@literallyshaking8019that’s why I stopped racing, when the Yamaha 4 strokes came I think they were called RXL? They came without a turbo in 03, and they could barely pull 100 mph in a qtr. then the stage2 turbo came out for them, about a $5-6000 upgrade, got them going about 112, then the stage 3 came out, and that got them closer to 120, that was $10000 upgrade, then nitrous, then this then that, before you knew it these guys, usually self employed general contractors, had $20-$30k invested in these sleds, I had maybe $3000 invested to get just over 120mph, the 98 Tcat would pull 118 all day long out of the crate, I mean for a ribbon or trophy, or at best $400 in winnings I just thought these guys egos got the better of them because the cost they put into these sleds to what they were winning made absolutely no sense to me, and I’m sure most of those guys had short crooked dics too, but that was enough for me, I wasn’t going to put that kind of money into a sled and risk blowing it when I also rode on the trails as well, the new sleds are incredible, Yamaha, Arctic Cat, those 1100 turbos are pulling more then 130 out of the crate from what I hear, technology will beat you every time, but, those old triple triples were awesome, they would just about pull your arms out of your sockets, now I’m an old man riding on a two up Ski-Doo

Lots of good comments and lots of misguided ones as well over the years. I remember the magazine reviews from those days and even back then they warned T-Cat guys to beware of the XCR and before that the Storms. Pull the two out of the crate, assemble and run, a T-Cat was a little faster, but Polaris guys had a bag of tricks to liven them up a bit, and then the XCR/Storm was a little lighter and had an easier angle of attack on the track. It didn't take much to get that little advantage in putting power to the ground, and then it was more up to the rider to use than anything.

I grew up in small town Ontario where everyone had Polaris. Moved to small town Manitoba where everyone owns cats. The local folklore is that the Zrt 600 was always faster than the XCR. Can anyone confirm their experience? I had a 96 XCR triple triple and can’t imagine a 600 being much faster than that beast was. Either way much respect to both brands, stupid power and reliable. Hi Meaghan. I was a member of the Aqua Riders many years ago along with six sisters and brothers and other families around the lake. When it was first formed we called it the Ski Club and the Woodwards and Sheehans used their inboard boats to pull us for practice and during the shows. Are those families still around? We took a drive up there around the lake today. a kind of walk down memory lane. Being there every summer when I was a child was some of the best times of my life. I am in my 60's now. It is hard to believe The Aqua Riders of Holland still exists 50 years later. We were so sorry to see that we had missed the show yesterday. Maybe we can come to the Finale show in August. Have a wonderful summer and a great life! I think my youngest brother, David, still has old movies of the ski shows.
