Good question Paul - we live on the border of Lane Cove National Park - there are thousands of sulphur crested cockatoos who call it home. There are also corellas, rainbow lorikeets, galahs, yellow tailed black cockatoos, kookaburras, southern boobooks, tawney frog mouths, and powerful owls. We are indeed blessed to live in a beautiful part of the world.

@@rgreen2092What a blessing to have them flying near your home. But I don’t get it? My budgies fly around in my home happily but if I let them into our garden, the entire road neighbourhood cats will kill them in nearly an instant. The whole road is full of cats. Some homes even have more than 1 cat each. No cats at all where you live? Where do you live? Which country?

Good morning @@wemuk5170 - Sydney Australia, on the border of Lane Cove National Park. Unfortunately - there are cats in our neighbourhood - it is very distressing for owners who allow their cats to roam (especially at night) kill significant numbers of native marsupials and birds each year. 🤐

Swedish Ravens are very interesting, however they are extremely shy. Regarded as one of the most intelligent birds. Some of them can be near humans, but rather 100 meters away. You can walk or bike near them, (25 meters) but just a glance at them, can make them take off in the air. They are extremely sensitive to be looked upon, for they see your glance and your eyes looking at them. Magpies, they are more cultural, they just fly or hop two or four meters when you cross their site.

Hi Gianni ... great question ! DJ was our (rescue) 7 year old sulphur crested cockatoo that we loved and adored. We wanted the best for her and found out that she could be a good candidate for a soft release program. A soft release program means that the cockatoos learn flight, socialisation with other birds, familiarising them with the 'tucker' in the area. Once released on the farm, they can hang around, free flighted with provisions of food, water and roosting or they can confidently integrate into large wild flocks. DJ was very familiar with eating native plants, but her flight and socialisation with other cockatoos needed attention before she could be fully released. DJ went to Geoff Wilkins Australian wildlife rehabilitation program (he's on facebook) to live and joined many of the birds you see in these large aviaries - Rambo (a wild cockatoo fledgling who couldn't fly and was rescued by a farmer) Marroo (a wild cockatoo hit by a car and left for dead - and sent to Geoff's), Lucky, Sparrow and Jordie and countless others. DJ and Sparrow, once released became 'an item' and have paired up - completely free to make their own decisions, to stay or go as they please. Geoff also is trained (by Port Macquarie Koala Hospital) in rescuing koalas in during the recent drought/bushfire season co-cared for 13 koalas. He also rehabs kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, and emus. If you ever want to donate to his charity - I can vouch for every cent going to wild life rescue. DJ is one beautiful lucky girl who has been spoilt. If you want to see what her life was with us .... Google "At home with DJ Olive Green" kzitem.info/news/bejne/06msmnV4jXaCgag

@rgreen2092

@Todd M There was racism towards some people from asian countries that was very unkind and I just want to keep things positive. Great that you are interacting with native wildlife. May I suggest an alternative to bread? I honestly hope you don't mind me saying this, and hope I don't sound like I am being the "cockatoo police" Unfortunately, bread is very bad for birds (has absolutely no nutritional value and white bread in particular has detrimental impact). In addition, during breeding season, the parent cockatoos regurgitate what they eat to their young and often, baby cockatoos can end up with metabolic bone disease .... their beak and their bones don;t develop. I live in medium density housing where many people feed baby cockies bread, so have had the heart breaking job of taking the cockatoos' young to the vet to be euthanized. Top Australian avian vet specialist - Dr Jayne Weller advised me that something like Trill's cockatiel mix from Woolworths has enough vitamins and minerals to not do harm. It is only $6 and you then can have peace of mind that what you are giving them is safe. Hope you don't mind me letting you know this and now I will get off my soap box ....
