I was once at a poker game in a small room without windows. One of the players passed wind, smelling of rotten eggs, and the game was postponed as the players had to leave the room. What people didn’t know was the player that passed the gas had also followed through, and the expensive red velvet on his chair was soiled by his diarrhoea. This caused a commotion and fists were thrown.

I’m not sure if the rules here. However, when the AA is shown on 4th street. He says he has to catch another and the odds are agsisnt after facing a raise. Why is he not raising here instead of calling, he can’t be beat at that point. Then on the last street, he bets 2500 into someone who has been chasing a flush, if he missed his flush he folds, if he hit he raises. Why bet at all here? Just check, and call or fold.

Splashing the pot. Dealer coaching the players by announcing possible hands. (I've been in plenty of hands where a player exclaims, I never saw the flush! It's bad form to spoil someone's hand by announcing possible hands.) Hollywood poker rarely gets it right. At least there wasn't a string bet. Most Hollywood offerings can't resist the, "I see your $100 and raise you a $1000," violation of poker etiquette. It's hard not to cringe at Hollywood poker scenes.

he would have won with any 8 or any other heart...it would have been more dramatic had the 8 of hearts been folded by other players, same thing in Maverick....he did not need ace of spades to win, but the 9 of spades would have been the best straight flush in the gibson/foster movie, with the ace of spades folded for "dramatic effect"

Real easy way to know what to do in these situations: Call timeout and ask the director what the name of the movie is. If your name is in the title, you should call the bet.

You would rather the movie featured two mediocre hands, then? I despair.
@1rjbrjb

@@tooleyheadbang4239 Not only would two mediocre hands be, by definition, more realistic, they would take at least as much skill to play. And if I had 3 Aces I might not fold just because of the glint in Kenny's eye. With everything going on in the world, you picked a peculiar reason to despair. At any rate, this scene moderates my nostalgia for the period.

@@1rjbrjb I suppose a movie called 'Olympic', about an ocean liner which doesn't meet the highly-improbable fate of being lost on its maiden voyage might suit you? Perhaps the thrilling story of a team of radio-astronomers who don't make contact with extra-terrestrial life? A newspaper that doesn't find itself in trouble with the FBI because it only prints racing results and the fatstock prices? A stage illusionist who never meets Nicola Tesla...?
@1rjbrjb

@@tooleyheadbang4239 OK, we're getting close to diminishing returns here but I will reply to one more snarky text. The poker hands were insanely improbable. This was unnecessary to the drama, assuming the bad acting could have sustained drama. So it's a little bit like The Natural with Roy Hobbs batting 1000 or stealing bases like the Flash. The Natural pushed the boundaries of what a baseball player could do, but it showed Hobbs in a slump and swinging and missing so it did not manifestly exceed human possibility. The entire premise behind this movie is that Rogers wrote a song about a degenerate gambler who died a hobo. In the movie he is Super-Gambler. And the hands here are an insult to anyone who has actually played poker. And, hey, a movie about the WOW signal, ambiguously hinting at the discovery of an ET would have been better than that hideous Jody Foster movie, not that she hasn't done good work at times. Watch the Twilight Zone episode: A Nice Place to Visit and it will show you what life is like with nothing but climax after climax. My last word on the subject. Thx for playing. May your life satiate cliché and appetite.
