I'm not seeing any speedo cable removal instructions in my Haynes 01 - 15 Triumph manual, but maybe I'm just not looking in the right spot. Took my 07 for a spin today in the cold and that speedo cable was making a high pitch whirling sound at certain speeds. I was going to pull the cable from the sheets and run grease over it, but flipping the speedo over and lubing that inner part seems smart. I don't think I have any graphite lube though.

Yeah there is nothing about speedo cables in the manual. I suppose almost any lube could work in the speedo. I only used graphite because it seems to be popular for lubing cables. A tip: disconnect the cable at the speedo end and go for a ride. If the noise stops then you know the cable is ok and the speedo is not ok.

What kind of lubricant do you use

In the video I used graphite lubricant, the same stuff that people use for locks. But now I think that ordinary 3-in1 oil is better. It tends to stay in the bearing and not drip out as much. Hope this helps!

Hi! I was wondering if your speedo was electrical or mechanical, you said it works via a cable so I suppose it's mechanical, however you said the bike is from 2007? I thought it would be a modern bike and that the speedo would be electrical. Is it? I have a similar problem but also on my tachometer. Thanks a lot!

The speedo is mechanical, the cable is a rotating shaft.

well thank you, tho' its sort of over my head, its the best explanation of what might be going on with my bike! 35k miles w/o a problem, i guess i was due...it always was sensitive to not starting cuz of a low batt'y, but this time i KNOW the batt'y is UP, but only turns over...spark looks weak to me, i expected a bold snap and sharp blue-white color...it had sat inside for over a week, but so what? my old '70 can start after months of sitting! oh well, test equipment needed ! gonna be too snowy to ride soon ( the bright side of it all ? )

Thanks! I should mention that having no scope, there is an alternate test for the pickup coil: If the tach bobbles around 200 RPM while cranking, the pickup coil is working. But if the tach does not move, then things can't be narrowed down so easily. Either the pickup coil is bad -- or -- the tach circuit in the ICU is bad -- or -- the tach itself is bad.
