Ima be honest as a fan and member of different music communities HipHop is very soft when it comes to opinions. Other genres of music classic albums and classic artists get challenged on the regular. But dare you say you don’t like a classic rap album and all of a sudden you shouldn’t even be “in the culture”. Like come on yall. Yall really think a baby being born at this exact second is gonna hold 2pac in the same regard as you?

The thing is this, Yachty is not wrong for what he said. The reason I think ppl are upset is because great artist, great rappers are what we call “students of that game” Kendrick studied older rappers before him. Lupe Fiasco studied Nas. Jay-Z studied Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Kool Moe Dee. Yachty doesn’t do that it seems, but he has a huge platform, he’s “made it”. He has beats on Drake’s FATD album, and to ask him about a classic Jay Z album he hasn’t heard, (and doesn’t like the beats) is a little insulting to some people. There are rappers Yachty’s age who will never make it, but has a deeper appreciation for artists before them
@RobMarkman
12 сағат бұрын
But he did hear it and he didn’t like the beats. Surely there were rappers who were active when black album came out and probably didn’t like it either, no? I can’t imagine 100% of people loved the album.
@RobMarkman

I even remember when Lupe, said he didn’t listen to A Tribe Called Quest growing up and people were upset at that.

@@RobMarkman very true. Not every hiphop fan is gonna love Black Album or any widely known album. Art is subjective. (Although Black Album is a hiphop classic and we all know that). And true Lupe never studied ATCQ but he did get inspiration for Food and Liquor 1 from It Was Written. I think the question is, has Yachty studied the game? Has he studied the legends? And no shade to Yachty. He’s successful and big ups to him. But I think the hiphop community is a little offended because he “made it” but wasn’t a “student of the game”. I’m sure Lil Wayne studied somebody before and during his Cash Money days. You don’t have to like Black Album, but Yachty, cmon bro, do your homework lol. Hip Hop had to fight to get to where it is

Come on your proximity to Yachty makes you disingenuous on this subject. You know damn well he should've listened to the Black Album before, especially if he constantly gives his opinion on music and he's trying to be in the hip hop media sphere. He's way old enough to have done a little research at this point.

@@RobMarkman to me this question is quite simple: either you publicly state your opinion on music and the culture, and then you have no choice but to educate yourself, OR you stay quiet and then you can be ignorant all you want (Saweetie's case probably). But you don't get to comment on the culture without a lil homework first.

Didn't we have this discussion about Yachty a while back when he said something about not listening to Biggie? I think the consensus then is basically what you said in this video - he's young and eras change. At least in this instance, he actually went back and listened on his own volition - for that we have to give the man some credit. We shouldn't get him outta here, especially since he is showing interest in trying to listen to older records. Like you said, we won't put too much stock in what he's saying but we can respect someone who takes the time to check out records from before his/her time.

The most coincidental thing is the Google ad that’s been running during the Olympics with Jay-Z’s “PSA” literally played before this vid started lol . This whole “generation” excuse doesn’t hold up considering millennials know too many records before we were born while also listening to our own era of 90’s and 2000’s . There’s literally kids on KZitem performing Michael Jackson records , Chaka Khan records and tons of others that predate them by larger generational gaps than Yachty. This whole “I wasn’t born yet” is NOT an excuse for people who consider themselves artist. The casual listener gets a pass but that’s it . (IMO)

26yr old hip hop fan here. in my experience no one my age or younger is really checking for Jay Z. and imo i look at it like this, by the time we were teenagers the sounds that were trending had shifted away from new york. like it was kanye, the young money crew, chief keef, ya know maybe some YG or Jcole. but you kinda had to go out of your way to find jay z and the new york sound. In our era (unless you had an older sibling that put you on) jay z was that dude that did the album with kanye and not much else.

I’m a 34 y-o “retired” rapper from the South 😅and the only Jay-Z album I heard was 4:44 😬 it’s because by the time I got into music, Jay wasn’t in his prime and wasn’t the rapper that caught my attention. And despite how legendary an artist might be, I’m not about to go back and listen to their discography if it came “before my time” or I’m just not interested. Scalding hot take: Jay-Z's albums are less interesting than, say, Illmatic or 36 Chambers. As someone born 2001, I always thought it was weird how much oldheads hype him up. Like I've been talking to the homies about this, and they all agree Jay is the most overrated rapper ever. Hell, even 50 Cent and Melle Mel agree. Jay-Z honestly got hard-carried by Kanye and Blaze production.
