I think it's an old style used in baroque days before the modern bow. I have a similar one that came with a psaltery.

A song a lot older than me, it was still popular when I was a child in the Fifties. It is a pleasure to hear two young women harmonise at any time, as it brings back memories of my young attendance at Baptist church services. This is a lovely rendition which I don't mind saying brought tears to my eyes. Thanks!
