My first EQ, 4:30 am , No clothes on and unable to stand to get dressed. Then I went into rescue mode. Pulled Children and animals out of broken windows For the next 30 years I slept with clothes and a backpack by my bed. !

I live in Santa Monica California (Los Angeles County) used to live in San Francisco. My house is new and built to current earthquake codes for California and the office I work in has been retrofitted to current California earthquake codes. I have a storm shelter with a month’s worth of food and supplies in the case of an actual earthquake emergency. I forgot to add the biggest earthquake I was in: Loma Prieta in San Francisco October 17th 1989. I was at the A’s-Giants World Series game! 15 seconds of pure adrenaline and fear! I’m glad I wasn’t on the Bay Bridge and especially not on the Cypress Expressway!

This video is like time traveling for me!!!! I was only 11 short miles from Northridge! It’s was dark because the sun wasn’t up yet, and there was no electricity from the quake, it was a terrifying bit of time waiting for light while 5.3 aftershocks were happening. The sun didn’t bring much relief when the extent of the damage became visible! My building had sunk for lack of a better description, and we had to kick our way out from the lower level the only exit route, it took three men after some effort to free us. I still do everything to stay out of Los Angeles.

Interesting how so many people are completely helpless when it comes to simple stuff like turning off water, gas and electrical mains that feed into their homes or apartments or whatever. Emergency services like fire and ambulance services can handle a few dozen simultaneous emergencies. Something like a real bad earthquake, I don’t care how pissed off you are if 911 doesn’t send help within the next 2 minutes….it may be several days before somebody can help. What’s this you say….”but someone just died here in our home!” Great!! Take a number and have a seat. Or get off your fat buttocks and do something about it yourself! And perhaps you could stop along the way to help someone else who is also desperate for help!

I remember the February 9 1971 earthquake and some of the same brages that fell in that quake fell again in 1994. And I know that to be true I saw another documentary about the two quakes. Love from Marysville, California

It’s been awhile since I’ve thought of this quake. I was in Simi Valley then and I thought a train was coming through our house. We slept on the front lawn for like 4 days after. I was 16 and we took my buddies car out to the SF Valley to see the damage ourselves. It was like a war zone. Crazy times.

I remember this earthquake was a very jumpy earthquake. Most sway side to side but this one, I remember my bed going up and down. I woke up because my dog was barking. I thought someone was close to our fence. As I was about to roll out of bed, the quake hit. I couldn’t even walk right without stumbling. What made it more frightening was that it hit in the middle of the night.

The Coalinga earthquake wiped out the entire downtown, it was old fashioned b2 story brick buildings, a really old-west looking town with wooden sidewalks! About half the homes and businesses in town were destroyed, some never rebuilt, like the "lacy" restaurant, which is sad, place had wonderful food!

A 6.6 earthquake on a blind thrust? Child's play. Come out here to the desert, I live in Ridgecrest where in two days we had a 6.4, 5.4, and a 7.1. We don't hide them under blind thrust faults. We are proud of our strike slip faults that rip the ground open for miles. The same thing happened in Hector Mine with a 7.1 earthquake in 1999 and a 7.3 in Landers back in 1992. Our strike slips are like God's tattoo on the desert floor. But, these big earthquakes seldom make much news because of minimal destruction. There are no freeways or large buildings to crumble. Few people are injured or killed in our big earthquakes. I truly hope an earthquake of this size never hits L.A. I have been in three magnitude 7 earthquakes in the desert, I can imagine what it would do to the city.

I was working at Disneyland at the time. I was on the graveyard shift for Fantasmic! maintenance. Me and a co-worker had poked our heads into The Country Bear Jamboree attraction when the earthquake hit. The Elvis bear started gyrating like the King himself. We went back to Tom Sawyer's island and discovered a natural gas leak on Fantasmic!. We shut the valves and the leak was repaired the next day. Also, the dragon door had started opening and slamming during the quake, so they installed earthquake pins to hold the door in place in case of another earthquake.

My aunt was living there at the time. Her house was mostly okay, but the hallway walls/ceiling collapsed and she ended up being stuck in her bedroom and had to wait until her adult sons moved aside the rubble. She was very, very lucky.

I hate to sound trite, but thank goodness that it happened so early in the morning. If it had hit during the day when the streets and the shops were full, the loss of life would have been so much worse. God bless the emergency responders and civilians who came to the rescue. God bless the friends and families of those who could not be rescused.

As eager as I would LOVE to believe that W.C. Fields clip ... it was staged. The Long Beach Quake of 1933 was still very fresh, and Fields concocted this gag with some pretty good special effects. (But watch the car: it doesn't move at all.)
