I was lucky to see them live before they retired in a church in Berlin. To me, Chumbawamba had only be known for "Tubthumping", later I found out they wre the smartest Anarcho-folk-punk-band ever. Love their music and most of their stuff a lot. This is a song I like a lot.

German critical race theory the ugly parts and when people raised up to a new world and strived for a a better understanding to be more inclusive to the experiences that make a good a decent society are all history and deserve its remembrance . To make reparations for past sins for it is there inequalities and undealt sorrow of a past threaten to tear a shared future apart.

Found this song way back in January. Brushed up on my Shostakovich research, like, a LOT- I'm talking pretty much obsessively- and compared to a lot of media inspired by Shostakovich's life, I think this song is probably the most accurate in terms of what I've seen. It balances both the fear he felt with what he did to continue to express himself, and doesn't fall prey to what I call the "dissident/puppet" dichotomy we see so often in portrayals of Shostakovich, which either shows an incomplete and sometimes misguiding view of him at best or is flat-out insulting at worst. It's refreshing in that it's relatively realistic, even if a few miniscule details don't make a lot of sense ("an operetta for our leader/a quartet for the drawer?" The only complete operetta Shostakovich wrote was "Moscow, Cheryomushki," which was written during the Khrushchev era and by then, he was publishing many of his "desk drawer" pieces, but I digress), and I've gotta say, I really appreciate that Chumbawamba did their research here. I'm not even sure if this was intentional with the words "hammer, stirrup, and anvil," as they could simply be referring to suppression of musical expression, but Shostakovich did refer to hearing his own music aloud as hearing with the "outer ear" as opposed to the "inner ear"- that is, hearing his music in his head while composing- so if that's an intentional reference there, I'm impressed.

This song reminds me of the pubs and Miners Welfare Clubs (in the days when we still had coal mines) that didn't have juke-boxes but the regulars would sing along to almost anything once someone got things started, didn't matter whether they knew the lyrics, they'd either make them up (and very cleverly sometimes) or hum along until the chorus had been heard and join in then, I hate to sound like an old fart but the ability to amuse yourselves is dying and needs CPR urgently before it goes completely.

Despite their small fan base, they're still much more talented than many popular bands today. You don't see these guys over utilize auto tune or have ghost writers making all their shit. Who said folk music was bad or only for old people?

well, I wouldn't call Chumbawamba a pure folk music band, because they have influences from lots of music styles. But yes, they are definitely really talented.

Of course, there has been endless debate about Shostakovich's attitude to Communism. See, for example: www.siue.edu/~aho/musov/deb/deb.html But perhaps I'm a fool to object to a simplistic assertion in a KZitem comment. How many lives could be wasted doing that?

Wagner woulnt like his songs beeing played at the opera, he was nuts, he founded his own festival for his own music. but well he wasnt a antisemit, he didnt cared at all, his wife was the one taking care of politics, and she was raving mad, antisemitsm is just a part of her political ideologie.

we bought this album after seeing them live in a small marquee at the broadstairs folk festival. i was blown away with the beautiful melodies and seemingly effortless performance. they are such calm and relaxed performers, so friendly yet professional, confident but sitll amusing, and happy in what they do. i love the fact that they sound live just like they do recorded. it's a testament to how little sound engineering they employ. magnificent. they are a national treasure, never to be recognised because of their conscientious lyrics and messages.

I grew up listening to Tubthumper but I had never heard much of anything else from chumbawumba. I just recently heard one of their songs again and decided to look up what happened to them. I was delighted to see they had still been making music until 2010. Im surprised this isn’t more popular, its so catchy!
