As I see, Jane Powell always brought "smiling attentive expressive eyes" to the screen with a bird like voice so many people like. However being so versital as an actress in Musicals, acting, dancing, singing, she in film, sings in this combination. However, in her youth, the "Ave Maria" was sung on film, with what appears a deep faith of love, as the song included. And I see and hear, she kept this love in her heart, through each KZitem film clip I have seen. We listen with a shared feeling of newly revived strength of reminiscence of heartfelt appreciation. As many Career Opera singers, together with many versatile talent as Jane Powell is as appreciated in the time I saw her petite figure on the television screen and because of how content seemed my own father who enjoyed movie and film, I try to reflect with a "try" but "amateur" manner, (thankfully, with a good ear and a good eye to watch these accomplished professionals of screen and television, now KZitem, too), to sing song that may be out of reach for my own 'self-practiced' "training belief", during my own time; towards what she brought to the screen, a fine tuned long standing vocal talent of consistent life of the outerworld (to borrow a word, "outlander-outworlder"=sort of like a visiting citizen of the past and the future, presently) of what Music and song teach, a love to be alive.

Not sure what you mean here. Do you mean today's young have bad taste, or that they think the opposite, that the movie is stupid? I believe the first is correct. True art is not the vogue today, sad to say.

She had the voice from a very early age. In 1944 she got a contract in Hollywood and received training there. See her autobiography, page 23, where she sais it was a Mrs. Fred :L. Olson.

Jane Powell, I adored her. There is one lovely lady in our time now, who is talented, lovely reminds me of Jane Powell somewhat, wonderful to watch, Christan Chenoweth . She is something to watch. I still loved 7 Brides for 7 Brothers, and other Jane Powell movies. Both ladies can sing Opera. Amazing.

Jane Powell you are a very beautiful girl & one of the best sopranos produced by Hollywood & your voice is supreme with classical opera & not when you invade the crooner's domain of popular romantic ballads.For example, your rendition of "Embraceable You "& "The Peanut Vendor" were so unsuited to your operatic voice that it was so embarrassing to listen to.
@stanvmcdaniel3789

Jane's voice and style was very flexible, and her voice was not limited to operatic song. In fact, she was not considered an operatic singer as such although she sang with Lauritz Melchior, for example. But in that "embraceable you' sequence, there was a lot of stress coming up as she is about to find out that there was a kind of competition between herself and her mother, which developed very shortly thereafter. And "the peanut vendor" was a marvelous improvisation as she asked cugat to play opera and he would not, so she improvised the dance and the song and wowed everybody including Melchior, because she deliberately sang various high notes and impressed him. It seems snobbish to so ignore her versatility.

Dear Sian McDaniel you obviously viewed my comments in regards to Jane Powell. Speaking of flexibility & versatility may I draw your attention to two super stars, Deanna Durbin & Kathryn Grayson. The talents of Durbin & Grayson obliterates Jane Powell's acting & vocal talents into insignificance I rest my case..

@@peterfarrar9015 'your opinion' of Jane's singing talents does not lessen the enjoyment she gave to many people over her career. I personally prefer her "inferior" talent to Grayson and Durbin. Besides her lovely voice, Jane always brought an appealing quality to all her acting roles, whether the role required her to sing, or not.

I'll challenge your taste on the "PEANUT VENDER" song. I thought it excellenly was very well done. I really enjoyed the mixing of opera with popular venues . She could sing any song in any venue and sound spectacular. She could sing the alphabet and sound spectacular and I would praise her spectacular voice. He voice had a tremendous range.

The sound on this recording, which I made from her old film, is very distorted and may make it sound "shrill" But she is very young, about 20, and has never been put forward as an opera singer. The essential message here is how she shows the personality of the role she plays in the film. You can't expect her to emulate Maria Callas.
