Rebounding, shooting, and defense? Of course he could. That's the thing about Erving. You would watch the game and see nothing spectacular for most of it. But you'd suddenly realize he had 30 points, a handful of rebounds, and a couple of steals. You never noticed it because you were always waiting for the spectacular dunk. Doc did the little things well. Then he'd put you on a poster, and not in a good way.

The first 3 minutes of the video show Dr. J easily blowing by multiple big men defenders and throwing it down with authority. David Thompson and MJ were definitely quicker; Dr. J had an advantage over David Thompson and MJ being gifted with a longer wingspan and larger hands. This advantage made it easier for Dr. J to dunk over big men through heavy traffic in the paint. Although it has been said that MJ's hands were almost as large as Dr. J's. David Thompson may have arguably had the highest vertical leap out of the three of them. Some fans have stated that David Thompson in his prime could touch the top of the backboard.

Dr. J admitted in his video tribute documentary that after Sixers lost to the NJ Nets in the 1984 playoffs, the 1st time an NBA championship team lost in the 1st round the very next year, he was already aware that the next superstars, Lary Bird, Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan were already going to be the faces of the future NBA. It was a nice tribute of him admitting that he was passing the torch at that time. I will never forget the amazing battles between the Sixers vs Celtics from 1980-thru-1982. The 1981 & 1982 EC Finals between the Sixers vs Celtics were the benchmarks of what game 7's were all about in NBA playoff basketball. The Doctor was amazing during his time. I was honored to witness those games on TV as a kid growing up.

One thing folks ought to notice -- every one of these dunks was contested, and that made them more spectacular, imo. In-game dunks in today's NBA aren't really earned because most defenders just turn and walk away if they get beat initially. Back when games were more competition than exhibition, defenders weren't worried about being "posterized." They made you earn every dunk and layup.

A completely unfair rap. Erving was actually deadly from the left wing, consistently banking in shots from 15 feet. Larry Bird, among others, has acknowledged this. Erving also was very good on 12-foot baseline jumpers, including the turnaround variety. Finally, as he aged, he became a very consistent shooter from the area around the top of the key. I recall as a middle schooler and into high school thinking he was money, in fact, on the latter shot. Erving is also given the shaft because his NBA scoring wasn't a match for his ABA scoring. No one seems to understand that Erving was very team oriented and shared the ball. When he arrived last-minute in Philadelphia after the merger, he was on a team with George McGinnis and Doug Collins. Obviously he would have wrecked that team had he come in demanding all of the shots. He toned down his game, and his scoring with it, and now clowns think this is because he had been "overrated in the subpar ABA." Yeah, right.
