Quick question...I have watched many of these waste oil burner videos and was wondering why none of them are build for in-home use. Any idea?

That’s probably due to safety concerns. It’s not impossible but would take some cash to make it UL approved.

I use 1/4 to the valve and 3/8 below the valve to the stove. The 1/4 limits the amount of oil I have going to the stove so I don’t have a run-away flame.

@KevinRushing63 yeah I used a 3/8 needle valve and it always over fills my stainless bowl. Back to the drawing board for me.

My governor back in 1980 converted a 2nd world war tortoise stove intoa waste oil and water drip fed stove and used a 4 inch peice of steel tube as the flue which went out through the roof we had to shut it down after 20 mins as the top of the flue was white hot and the flame was blasting out the top of the flue by about 6 feet and sounded like a doodlebug it nearly burned the workshop down ....awesome power though

what stops the oil lighting in the pipe and going to the tank
@KevinRushing63
8 ай бұрын
For combustion to happen there has to be heat, fuel and oxygen. Since the tube is full of fuel no oxygen can enter. Also the air being blown in for combustion cools the oil below ignition temperature. The fuel doesn’t burn until it enters the bowl . Hope that answers your question.

I like this idea for a shop heater. I heat my house with wood 🪵. My house is 30x60 with a four foot hallway down the center. And what I do to move the air is to put a box fan at the end of the hallway in front of the bedroom blowing the cooler air on the floor towards the wood stove that’s in the living room. It works great if you hold a candle 🕯️ up high the flame 🔥 will be leaning over in the direction of the hot air flow. And held low it goes in the direction of the cold air. I just leave the fan on low.

I think that was a 45 going into the bowl. I'm just messing with you. This is good stuff. I'm trying to do the same thing. Only because my best friend owns a bar and he has used fryer grease to get rid of. It piles up in clear 5 gallon jugs. I have a couple storage tanks with the hand cr a nk pump. I just burn garbage with the it but I have a bunch of old woodstoves and a ton of ingenuity. Figured I could get a better use out of the grease. Even tho I already heat my house for free with firewood that I cut. Part of me just wants to make a waste oil heater just to do it

What keeps the oil from going down the air pipe before turning on the fan.

The oil is controlled by a valve and drips directly into the bowl. The blower starts when I slip the switch. The fan turns on automatically when the temperature reaches a preset temp

So years ago, before the internet, I did this to a wood stove in my shop. It worked really well for quite a while. One day while it was running in my shop, I got distracted by an intruder on the property. about 45 minutes later when I got back. The entire stove and stove pipe were red hot. Glowing, almost white, and it was burning like a jet engine. Luckily I had a well casing as a stove pipe and it held up. It was insanely scary. My shop was all metal, there was nothing around it to burn and a concrete floor, It took it like 3 hours to burn down. I used up four fire extinguishers on it. They were useless. water would immediately flash to steam. not an option. going to build another one but it will have safety features. Be careful guys

I had a similar experience. You’re right, once that oil gets hot it’s hard to put the fire out. I even shut off all access to air and it still continued to burn for quite awhile. It was explained to me that’s the reason for the feed pipes being inside the burn pan so that if the oil level gets too high it will choke off the air and kill the fire. I’m not sure it would work, especially with forced air.
@KeithBair
Жыл бұрын
At first it sounds contradictory, but adding oil to an oil fire can help cool it down and put it out. By mixing cold oil with the burning oil, it will cool down the burning oil and make it easier to extinguish when it gets closer to not being of a self igniting temp. Water on oil is a no go.
@windstalker101
Жыл бұрын
@@KeithBair Well you're right about one thing, it is counterintuitive, since I had oil running onto it continuously for 45 minutes. It doesn't seem like leaving it on would have solved the problem. Conversely, it would have run out of the stove and into my shop. As I said this is before the internet, I had never seen or heard of such a thing. I just sort of invented it. a total science experiment. Scared me so bad I never did it again. during this I got burned so bad I had to go to the ER. Oil spattered on me from the fire extinguishers. burning oil. after watching a bunch of videos about it I am going to try it again. Although with much caution.

Oh Kevin.... that bowl- seems to me it might be a little tall? Directing the flame against the top mainly. But what if you cut the bowl off top or bottom (😂jk) cut the top lip down so the stove gets better heat dispersion. OH!!! OR! !!‐ from the top of the bowl- cut Down 1 1/2 inches, turn a 90 and cut across parallel with the top edge 2-3 INCHES. REPEAT! NOW... bend these out 30- 45°! Now you have introduced a swirling turbulence! ALWAYS helps with o2 molecules finding hungry fuel molecules! Nice build. What do you think? Anyone?

@KevinRushing63

I wired in a 120 degree F snap disk temperature switch. It’s attached to the back of the stove about an inch from the surface of the stove. When the temp reaches 120 the switch closes and the fan starts
