Actually, Superman could ethically (although not legally) justify killing Luthor, under the doctrine of "defense of others" (since it is a certainty that more bodies will continue to pile up as long as Luthor occupies his "certain position in the community"); but this, of course, would be inconsistent with Our Hero's image and traditions. Dean Cain and John Shea aren't quite as good as Superman and Luthor as Christopher Reeve and Gene Hackman were, but they were close enough to make this series very enjoyable to watch. And Teri Hatcher was, hands down, the best Lois Lane EVER. (She was the only one who really convinced me that a demigod would have wanted her as a consort. She also functioned as a real character, above and beyond getting into trouble so that Superman could rescue her).
@xanderm6090

Well it's not just about not killing people being morally wrong, but it's also the fact that Superman would never really have anyone trust him if he just randomly lasered an upstanding citizen.
@tadimaggio

@@xanderm6090 A very good point, especially since most people would already be rather nervous about Superman. The combination of his extraterrestrial origins with his incredible power -- no matter how seemingly benevolent he was -- would have many people wondering "Yes, he's kind and helpful NOW; but what if he throws a temper tantrum when he has a bad day, or even tries to help someone, and ends up hurting or killing them simply because he doesn't know his own strength?" I wrote a lengthy novel about Superboy (aged 18), where he arranges to hold a global referendum on the Internet one year after his mission to help Earth begins, on the question of whether he should stay or go as Earth's protector. He wins, but not by much. Many people in Asia, Africa and Latin America see him as an agent of Western imperialism; many religious fundamentalists are angry that he performs his superfeats without any mention of God; and many people are just chronically distrustful of anyone so utterly DIFFERENT. When you stop to think of how humanity has treated so many of its own superior members -- Socrates, Jesus, Joan of Arc, Lincoln, and Gandhi, just to name five -- it's not easy to be optimistic.

John Shea deserves A LOT MORE recognition for his performance. He was such a great Lex Luthor - charisma to spare with the swagger, arrogance, sliminess, sinister undercurrent, and suave charm to make it all work.

I really do prefer this version of the costume Dean Cain wore compared to the costume he would wear for the rest of the series. The hairstyle is slicked back but not too far back, the "S" is a perfect size and not too fat like he would end up with for the rest of the series. Idk man, this pilot costume is just perfect for me.

John Shea always was an underrated actor, and he made a great Luthor. I always thought that John de Lancie -- who played "Q" on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" -- would also have done great things with the part. The two best Luthors -- Shea and Hackman -- have had a playful, oh-what-a-bad-boy-am-I quality about them that is very entertaining. Simply making a villain ice-cold and full of hate, while it is more realistic, is also less engaging.

I've always loved the character of Superman, and in my more daydreamy moments (I am now 65), I wish that there actually was one. But then I'm always brought up short by the fact that, if he was to truly fill the role of a hero, he couldn't simply solve humanity's problems for us without destroying what little character that we have. I wrote a lengthy novel about Superboy -- age 20, just about to segue into Superman -- and he consciously limited his global mission to actions that were extensions of the functions of humans who already protect the community: police officers, firefighters, etc. Thus, he would have used his powers to put out the recent wildfires in Australia, because that's a job that actual firefighters were trying to do; but he wouldn't get rid of the Pacific Trash Vortex or nuclear weapons, because those were threats that the human race had deliberately created (whether by intent or neglect), and thus had to deal with itself. He frequently had a bad time psychologically when the world didn't back him up. In one scene, he brought an evil woman who ran a child sex-trafficking ring to justice, and then had to stand by helpless as she taunted him as she walked away, when no country wanted to claim jurisdiction to try her. He nearly killed her in a fit of rage, but heard the voice of Rao (God), reminding him of his moral duty to not shed blood. I don't think that most Superman films and TV shows do justice to how difficult WE -- the human race -- would make life for a real Superman.

As far as Lexes go, John Shea is my favorite. He made the character HIS, similar to Heath owning the Joker. Shea's acting was so good on the show (at least for the first two seasons) that he made the other actors look kinda underwhelming, by contrast.
