Save yourself a lot of work and invest in a sand filter. You can use your existing piping so you don’t have to take it down.

People looking to do this have to come to their REALIZATION that No matter how you decide to do this, whether you buy off-the-shelf skimmer or make your own watching DIY videos like these, YOU NEED STRONG SUCTION at the bottom of your skimmer. That's how any skimmers work; *enough SUCTION to pull water away from your pool.* If you don't have enough suction, then you need to either UPGRADE your main pool pump that can provide strong suction or buy a new and separate pump just for the SKIMMER. So, the skimmer will have strong suction to pull water all on its own. This is usually the issue people have with their skimmers. It's not that your skimmer is designed badly or broken. This is what people putting out videos like these fail to mention.

If you worry about evaporation & the skimmer pump sucking in air - use a Hudson valve to replace the lost water; works like a champ on my large fountain that loses water due to splashing & evaporation!

The pump is a 2500 GPH with the “B” size filter cartridge. I had great success with a “good quality” filter carriage which are not that expensive. They last a least a year before needing to be replaced. You can order them online, I don’t remember the brand name but buy one that is made by a company that also makes large “inground” pool filters. This will save you a lot of money! Trust me, the cheap ones wear out quickly. I just rinsed mine out about with a garden hose and nozzle once every week or two. I kept one old filter around and once every couple months I soaked the good filter in a bucket of mild chlorine bleach water. Worked great! I know a lot of people like sand filters but the cartridge filter cleans to a smaller micron...

Did you add a filter or screen to the skimmer or does the debris just go to the main filter?
@jaredowens3758
4 жыл бұрын
I just let it go to the main filter. However I was going to add one but never go around to it. We don’t have the pool anymore or by now I would have created one. The main filter works fine but you will need to rinse the filter Cartridge at least one a week. Also it you notice a reduction in water flow the inlet from the hose to the pump gets clogged up with larger debris such as leaves. I had actually bought a three pack of sink filter inserts at Home Depot that prevent things to go down the drain and was going to try to use one them. But we moved before I got around to it...

What size PVC did you use to actually connect to the existing ports on the side of the pool?
@jaredowens3758
4 жыл бұрын
I’m working from memory as we moved and no longer gave the pool. I think I was able to slip 3/4” pvc through the factory ports. I wanted to find some cut in type of ports but never was able to locate them. That would have even worked better by allowing more volume. I’ll try to find the link to a video I watched which was what I was wanting to do. It was very well done.

I like the design! how did you hook up the hose to the bottle? or does it "just" fit without any modifications?
@jaredowens3758
4 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on the pool, I don’t think they are all the same set up. I found that I could slip a 3/4” pvc pipe through the factory inlets. I used bilge pump hose I bought at Home Depot from the skimmer to the pvc pipe. On the inside of the pool I had a 1” to 3/4” fitting and the bilge pump hose slipped snuggly on to the fitting. At fist I used a hose clamp but then realized I didn’t need the clamp. I didn’t glue the fitting to the pipe either. It wasn’t necessary. As far as the hose to the container. I found a threaded fitting that used a inside washer which held it to the lid which is where the container was connected to the hose. I did used a hose clamp to hold the hose clamp to the threaded fitting.
