Mike did an outstanding job on this track. My Godfather was Fred Rannalli and he had his own shop in Orange County. Your table is as nice as his was. RIP Mike.

My family (kids 8,9,10, and 12) just "discovered" slot car racing. The joy that this brings the whole family (including my beautiful wife, whom I will hear off in the room alone practicing her racing at times) is wonderful. The family is just drawn to our Carrera track, daily. So, I looked on like at what pro-level racing looks like and I found Mike Whitley. Watching these videos, I see a true craftsman of vision and integrity in his craft. That is even more valuable than a quick watch on some slot car action. Glad to have found Mr. Whitley and his valuable expression of man's pursuits.

Thank you everyone for your comments and likes. Mike worked hard on this slot car track and was very proud of it. I am his wife and I wanted to let those who have asked questions about the build know that Mike passed away almost 16 months ago...I'm so glad he made these videos. Watching them is like having him here again ❤

This is a work of art. I wonder how you calculated the size and radiuses of the banked curves as they get smaller when you bank them. This also effects the fitment of the skirt in relation to the base-shape

Did you have to beef up the underside of the banked curve with another layer of wood?

Hi. Very Nice build! Could you tell me what do you use to prep track. I know a lot of home tracks are using silicone and urethane. No justice for wing cars I’m sure using them for speed. Thanks.

I do not like seeing MDF being hammered like that with no "spreader" wood between the face being hit and the hammer. The damage caused is visible. Not good. I am only an amateur but I would never do that. I would also have a spacer in the slots to aid alignment. At 12.15 "That'll do, we're not building watches". Wow!

4 3/4”from outside to the center of the two outside lanes and 9 1/2” to the center of the two inside lanes. All of this is on a piece and f medium density fiber board 23 7/8” wide

I'm looking for info on building banked turns for 1/48-1/24 racing.. Mostly 1/32, but I'd like a few smaller 1/24 cars to be able to race it.. Is there ANY other way to build a banked turn besides these relief cuts? I could swear I had a VCR tape with a guy who glued a bunch of thinner plywood together..
@mikewhitley7202

Not that I know of. The problem with using thinner material is routings the slots. If the material is 1/4” or less you will router bit will go completely through it

@P Huster Easy way to bank 1/2" MDF turn: Just make the turn a few more degrees (of turn) than your design calls for, then squeeze the incoming and outgoing straights together until they fit the design. If the straights are 8 ft or so, a couple of guys can squeeze it and fix it in place, but if they are short, you might need to use a come-a-long. Steve Ogilvie has a formula for working this out precisely, but it's quite complicated, so I just eyeball it and it has worked out great. Of course, if the turn is 90 degrees or less, you just block up the outer edge for banking, so this is only necessary for turns of 90 or more, including donuts. Hope this helps.

Using a flat cone calculater app you can design any banked track exactly as you want it. Is there a reason you cant make the relief cuts ?
