Where is the footage of the 1985 US Grand Prix? One of the most spectacular overtakes in the history of F1. Maybe the makers of this compilation were too young to remember. If you are going to make videos about auto racing you should have a little knowledge.

When people chide me for trashing post-2008 F1 I should show them this video. Keke stayed on top-form through the most tumultuous era of F1 development when Turbos and Ground effects/side skirts were key, and he was one of the drivers that mastered the element of overtaking in a slower car. Now the cars are so heavy, so aero-sensitive, and so long that you need DRS to even consider a move, either that or a car that's a second and a half faster around a wide circuit. Nearly all the 'skill' in modern F1 is reliant just on tyre management and silly DRS shenanigans, and in turn we've come to the point that we've lost nearly an entire generation worth of actual talent and skill. Alonso and to a lesser extent Hamilton are the only holdouts from an era where you could really push for actual overtakes with good cars, and even the later never truly got the time to hone that skill considering the cars made it irrelevant by the time 2010 started up. I don't know if Keke, or someone with the same sort level of talent like Emmo or Lauda, could still showcase their skill in the post-2008 overweight aero-driven shitboxes. Keke was a master of utilizing draft and darting with late breaking to make overtakes on faster cars, nowadays DRS would mean that one guy is either 5 meters ahead by the time they reach the breaking zone, or they're side-by-side and the darting under breaking would cause the tires to lock up and have to abort the corner.

I could be wrong but imo Senna and Keke were the fastest drivers of the 80's hands down. And Keke was the most imposing too which could be paradoxical but not in this case. :D :D :D

Sad thing is that back in the day, Keke had to phone in the results of the race to Finnish sports anchors.. if they decided to pick up the call. Which is one of the reasons Nico raced under german flag.

Was struggling to remember if we had live feeds of the races back then. That sounds about right, it was probably the next day´s newspaper I found out Keke was the champion in 82. That doesn´t quite leave an imprint into memory such as seeing something live. And utterly correct move by Keke to keep family far from finland btw.

Missed Keke's greatest win, 1983 Monaco

True! I am no fan of Monaco to be honest. Besides the great track layout, the immense concentration, drivers must maintain and of course, the historical aspect, the track does not produce exciting races. But when it comes to Monaco I always think of Keke, back in 1983. Everyone was excited to see how the two Slik drivers, Keke and Jaques, would be doing. Laffite unfortunately retired. Keke drove in absolutely outstanding form and literally vanished in front of the others as soon as he was leading the race. Imo, one of the greatest races ever! Unfortunately to often ignored when it comes to great drives. Same here!

All that sudden, odd and stubborn oversteer was meaning only one thing: he was about to wreck that tire and the car with it. Plus they were not even at half race, no way he could get to the finish, everyone (Jacques as well) knew that. So what he was going to win?
@ghenckel
11 жыл бұрын
He didn't stop because he was leading the British Grand Prix! As you know, a stop in this era, ensured you would not win this prestigious race. In front of all the British teams... Drivers seeking a future ride, back in these dark days, wanted to win Monaco and Britain. Jacques was in the midst of getting his butt kicked by Pironi in 1980, and needed to keep his options open. Winning Britain was a gamble he felt willing to take at that moment.

I did not mean for a moment he would have had a "modern" pit-stop, I'm 42, motorsport addicted from 1980 and I well know modern pit-stop were invented and properly organized only two years later (in 1982) by Brabham Team, but since actually Laffite was on lap 30 of 76, it was for sure out of question to "continue driving the car", not even slowly. I would have understood he taking such a risk 6 or 7 laps left, not well before half race, he just didn't stand a chance.
@MrTann2010

because a tire stop in those days are not like these days. In those days, a tire stop would take about 20 to 30 seconds, which would cost him a lot of places and a bad pit stop would bring him to the rear of the field, so surely he had that in mind and would see if he could still continue driving the car.

Yep, that's a puncture. A shame so much of this is in German because the original commentary between Hunt and Stewart got quite heated earlier in the race when they discussed whether or not you could see the rear tyres when seated in the car. Still, good to have the entire event posted. Many thanks.

@iknowwhereyoulive006 Nothing to apologize for. To me, 1983 was Keke's best year. Especially the race in Brazil, where his car caught fire during refuelling - he lost 70 seconds in the pits. Ho got back into the car after the fire was out and stormed from 7th(!) to 2nd(!) in the second half of the race. Unfortunately he got disqualified for being push-started after his pitstop. With these six points, he would have been championship leader throughout the first half of the year....
@TheColinChapman

@iknowwhereyoulive006 I beg your pardon, but you are wrong. In his world championship year, Keke won only one race - the Swiss Grand Prix at Dijon. His Monaco win in damp conditions was in 1983 as I wrote. Riccardo Patrese won in Monaco 1982. Just type in here on KZitem "1982 Monaco last laps" and you'll find the most thrilling finale of a Formula 1 race you can imagine.

good vid, but you'Ve missed Keke's best race - the 1983 Monaco Grand Prix. Starting in damp conditions, he was the only top-runner on slicks, he started from 6th place on the grid and was 3rd in St. Devote. He led after a couple of laps. For me, a race similar to Ayrton Senna's performance 1993 in Donington.
