Honestly, I don’t think he got sexually assaulted. Although I do understand why that’s the common Take away of everybody.. It doesn’t suit the judges MO I read this theory that it was more of his moral viewpoint And the kid gave in and became a total monster. When the bar girl that was a dwarf that looked like a 12-year-old Mexican girl. But he couldn’t get it up and what not Unfortunately, I can’t give a profound and elaborate take like a lot of you guys. I don’t find myself to be an intelligent type, but the author is very descriptive and detailed for a reason I do believe it bothered the judge that the kid wouldn’t partake or wouldn’t be swayed by him I do think they fought maybe the kid won and he became the monster. I don’t know.

I feel like the judge is very clearly the devil. So many biblical references. He’s almost magical in his wickedness in that he has zero redeeming qualities , but to an extreme. I believe the “west” is a reference to the garden of Eden due to immense beauty and how it captivated everyone back then. And the judge would be the snake that corrupts Eden and tempted Eve in the way the judge does. I believe that because of the vile and awful things that happen in the west , due to man following all temptations, “Eden” becomes “Dante’s Inferno”. And The Boy who becomes The Man must crawl his way out of the deepest pits of hell. Only to be stopped by the devil himself in the end….. that’s what I feel it was about lmao not a religious person just pretty well versed in several religious texts and historical texts

Thank you for this thorough and illuminating explanation. I also had a similar feeling of ambivalence when I read the novel the first time. I admired the beauty of the writing but felt there was a philosophical overlay that asked too much. I agree that The Kid met the fate of rape and murder, which he danced with for many years, in the end. Reading the novel again years later, I gathered a new and deeper understanding of the Judge’s character, beyond his being a supernatural- sociopath. My explanation is that the Judge represents the chaos that we all dance with in our existence. McCarthy had a keen understanding of the cosmological reality of man’s existence. He was known to spend long periods of time at Los Alamos laboratory in New Mexico speaking with scientists. He understood that for all of our knowledge and reason, there is literally a Black Hole of oblivion around which we spin. Ultimately, we all fall towards that void…reason, right and wrong, morality and immorality.

I really love how you walk us through this experience, and gotta say it's new. I'm glad it is not just me or, other viewers, but how anyone experiences it. I'd love a breakdown of milkweed , but obviously it's very much a lower fiction still , I'd love to hear any analysis

... A GREAT novel - episodic by nature and - maybe - by necessity. Good and Evil have always been relative. We all have our learned views on the nature of good and evil, but they go through their own kind of evolution. Blood Meridian gives us many characters to consider, and while some are darker than others, most are pretty solidly gray ... Good ? Bad ? ... Who knows. In THIS novel, the best of them are able to kill for profit and find ways to live with it ... just like most of us and most of human history ... Is a wolf evil for killing to survive ? Is a soldier good for " defending his country " when it was never HIS country that was in danger ? ... Does the Judge represent " God ", or does he represent " Satan " ... and is there REALLY any difference ? Gonna stir up some shit with this one !

My interpretation is that the kid (now the man) kidnapped and raped the girl in the jakes and the judge was in his head and symbolised the kids transformation into evil and violence

I’m certain theJudge committed rape at the end of the novel. I’m not convinced it was the man. I believe it was the girl who was upset about the dead bear. After that event, people are yelling her name and can’t find her. I initially thought she was found in the Jakes not the man. But now I’m certain it was the man in there.

One point I will make: never, ever use the “horse’s perspective”, or “the dog’s perspective”, etc. that is college writing class stuff, and McCarthy is guilty of it. Even good writers make bad mistakes

Not sure I'm going to be taking advice on reading from someone who calls 'Follet', 'Folay'. Clue: the 't' is sounded at the end and the 'e' is not 'ay' but 'eh' (not /eɪ/ but /ɛ/). Follet is a reasonably well-known author.
